BEFORE YOU BEGIN Thank you for selecting the revolutionary PROFORM® 280 CSX exercise bike. Cycling is an effective exercise for increasing cardiovascular fitness, building endurance, and toning the body. The 280 CSX exercise bike provides an impressive selection of features designed to make your workouts at home more effective and enjoyable. after reading this manual, please see the front cover of this manual. To help us assist you, note the product model number and serial number before contacting us.
ASSEMBLY To hire an authorized service technician to assemble the exercise bike, call 1-800-445-2480. Assembly requires two persons. Place all parts of the exercise bike in a cleared area and remove the packing materials. Do not dispose of the packing materials until assembly is completed. In addition to the included tools, assembly requires an adjustable wrench screwdriver . and a Phillips Use the drawings below to identify the small parts needed for assembly.
2. While another person lifts the rear of the Frame (1), attach the Rear Stabilizer (6) with two M10 x 75mm Carriage Bolts (30) and two M10 Locknuts (33). 2 33 33 3. While a second person holds the Upright (13) near the Frame (1), connect the Upper Wire Harness (36) to the Lower Wire Harness (55). 1 6 30 3 Carefully pull the excess Upper Wire Harness (36) out of the top of the Upright (13), and slide the Upright onto the Frame (1). Avoid pinching the wires Tip: Avoid pinching the wires.
4. Attach the Water Bottle Holder (8) to the Upright (13) with two M4 x 22mm Screws (20). 4 13 5. Attach the Handlebar (15) to the Upright (13) with two M8 x 47mm Patch Screws (9) and two M8 Curved Washers (39).
6. The Console (16) can use four D batteries (not included); alkaline batteries are recommended. Do not use old and new batteries together or alkaline, standard, and rechargeable batteries together. IMPORTANT: If the Console has been exposed to cold temperatures, allow it to warm to room temperature before inserting batteries. Otherwise, you may damage the console displays or other electronic components.
8. Attach the Seat Frame (28) to the Frame (1) with three M8 x 25mm Patch Screws (45) and three M8 Split Washers (41). 8 45 45 45 41 41 28 1 9. Loosen the Seat Knob (11) and pull it outward. Next, insert the Seat Post (5) into the Seat Frame (28). 9 Press the Seat Post Cap (54) into the lower end of the Seat Post (5). 5 Align one of the adjustment holes in the Seat Post (5) with the indicated hole in the Seat Frame (28).

Attach the Seat (12) to the Seat Post (5) with four M8 Locknuts (10) and four M8 Split Washers (41). 10 Note: The M8 Locknuts (10) and the M8 Split Washers (41) may be preattached to the underside of the Seat. 12 5 41 10 11. Identify the Left Pedal (24), which is marked with an “L.” Using an adjustable wrench, firmly tighten the Left Pedal (24) counterclockwise into the left arm of the Crank (21). 41 10 11 Tighten the Right Pedal (not shown) clockwise into the right arm of the Crank (21).
HOW TO OPERATE THE EXERCISE BIKE HOW TO ADJUST THE SEAT POST HOW TO ADJUST THE PEDAL STRAPS For effective exercise, the seat should be at the proper height. As you pedal, there should be a slight bend in your knees when the pedals are in the lowest position. To adjust the pedal straps, first pull the ends of the straps off the tabs on the pedals. Adjust the straps to the desired position, and then press the ends of the straps onto the tabs.
CONSOLE DIAGRAM FEATURES OF THE CONSOLE You can even connect your MP3 player or CD player to the console sound system and listen to your favorite music or audio books while you exercise. The advanced console offers an array of features designed to make your workouts more effective and enjoyable. To use the manual mode, see page 13. To use a preset workout, see page 15. To use the sound system, see page 15.
HOW TO USE THE MANUAL MODE The lower right display can show your pedaling speed and the resistance level of the pedals. The display will change modes every few seconds. The display will also show your heart rate when you use the handgrip pulse sensor (see step 5 on page 14). 1. Press any button on the console or begin pedaling to turn on the console. When you turn on the console, the displays and the workout target pacer will light. A tone will then sound and the console will be ready for use. 2.
5. Measure your heart rate if desired. 6. Turn on the fan if desired. If there are Contacts sheets of clear plastic on the metal contacts on the handgrip pulse sensor, remove the plastic. In addition, make sure that your hands are clean. To measure your heart rate, hold the handgrip pulse sensor with your palms resting against the metal contacts. Avoid moving your hands or gripping the contacts tightly.
HOW TO USE A PRESET WORKOUT the center indicator lights, maintain your current speed. IMPORTANT: The workout target pacer is intended only to provide a goal. Make sure to pedal at a speed that is comfortable for you. 1. Press any button on the console or begin pedaling to turn on the console. See step 1 on page 13. 2. Select a preset workout. To select one of the eight preset workouts, press one of the eight buttons on the right or left side of the console.
MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING Locate the Reed Switch (43). Turn the Crank (21) until the Magnet (38) is aligned with the Reed Switch. Loosen, but do not remove, the indicated M4 x 16mm Screw (49). Slide the Reed Switch slightly closer to or away from the Magnet, and then retighten the Screw. Turn the Crank for a moment. Repeat until the console displays correct feedback. Inspect and tighten all parts of the exercise bike regularly. Replace any worn parts immediately.
EXERCISE GUIDELINES WARNING: Burning Fat—To burn fat effectively, you must exercise at a low intensity level for a sustained period of time. During the first few minutes of exercise, your body uses carbohydrate calories for energy. Only after the first few minutes of exercise does your body begin to use stored fat calories for energy. If your goal is to burn fat, adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is near the lowest number in your training zone.
