Facilities To avoid electromagnetic interference and/or compatibility conflicts, turn off your radio in any facility where posted notices instruct you to do so. INSTALLATION REPLACING THE BATTERIES 1 2 Remove the screw, then lift off the battery cover. Insert three (3) AAA batteries as shown by the polarity diagram in the compartment. Replace the battery cover. BATTERY PRECAUTIONS Follow these precautions when using batteries in this device: 1. Use only the size and type of batteries specified. 2. Be sure to follow the correct polarity when installing the batteries as indicated in the battery compartment. Reversed batteries may cause damage to the device. 3.
OPERATION (CONTINUED) Transmitting range The talk range depends on the environment and terrain. It will be the greatest (up to about 2 miles) in wide open spaces, without obstructions such as hills or buildings. Don't try to use two radios which are less than 1.5m (5 feet) apart as you will get interference. Important Safety Warning • To reduce radio frequency exposure when you're using this radio, hold the handset at least 5cm (2 inches) from your face. Never use the radio outdoors in a thunderstorm.
OPERATION (CONTINUED) ADJUSTING THE VOLUME 1 2 1 To adjust the loudspeaker volume, press the UP 1 or DOWN 2 button. The volume level is shown by the bars on the display. You can change the volume when using the radio or while it is idle. CHANGING THE CHANNELS This radio has 22 channels, numbered 1 to 22. To communicate with other users within range, all radios must be tuned to the same channel. 1 2 3 2 1 Press the UP 1 or DOWN 2 button to select the desired channel number.
OPERATION (CONTINUED) TRANSMITTING AND RECEIVING 1 2 To transmit, press and hold the TALK button; the Transmitting icon (TX) will appear in the display. Speak clearly in a normal tone of voice into the microphone. When finished, release the TALK button to receive transmissions. When receiving transmissions, the Receiving icon (RX) will appear in the display. NOTE: When the TALK button is pressed, you can only transmit, not receive. To receive, release the TALK button.
OPERATION (CONTINUED) RING TONE You can send ring tones to other handsets within range which are tuned to the same channel, to alert them you want to communicate with them. 1 Press and release the CALL button to hear the ring tone for about two seconds while the transmitting icon (TX) and call icon appear in the display. Any other radios within range which are tuned to the same channel will hear the ring tone and may decide to transmit to you.
OPERATION (CONTINUED) LOCKING THE BUTTONS With the buttons locked, you can transmit (Talk), receive or monitor the current channel. But you can't change the volume or use the MENU button. 1 2 To lock the buttons, press and hold the MENU button until the key icon appears in the display. To unlock the buttons, press and hold the MENU button until the key icon disappears from the display.
OPERATION(CONTINUED) Battery Meter Indicator: The FRS can detect the battery charge levels. The Battery icon will display the battery charge status as follows; 1 Battery charge at low level. Battery charge at high level. NOTE: When the battery level reaches its minimum level, the handset will emit two beep tones and automatically turn OFF the power.
