Intended Use The Ironton ½ Inch Compact Right Angle Drill is designed to accept drill bits from 1/16 inch to 1/2 inch with a bit shank diameter from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch. The side handle can be attached to either side of drill, while front handle can be adjusted to 3 different positions, giving you optimum drilling capability.
of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. The product can create sparks, which may ignite the flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Do not allow the drill to come into contact with an electrical source. The tool is not insulated and contact will cause electrical shock. Keep children and bystanders away from the work area while operating the tool. Do not allow children to handle the product. Be aware of all power lines, electrical circuits, water pipes, and other mechanical hazards in your work area.
before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally. Store the drill when it is not in use. Store it in a dry, secure place out of the reach of children. Inspect the tool for good working condition prior to storage and before re-use. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for use with your product.
grounding plug. The plug MUST be plugged into a matching receptacle that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with ALL local codes and ordinances. DO NOT MODIFY THE PROVIDED PLUG. If it will not fit the receptacle, have the proper receptacle installed by a qualified electrician. CHECK with a qualified electrician or service person if you do not completely understand the grounding instructions, or if you are not sure the tool is properly grounded.
Grounded tools require a 3-wire extension cord. Double Insulated tools can use either a 2- or 3wire extension cord. As the distance from the supply outlet increases, you must use a heavier gauge extension cord. Using extension cords with inadequately sized wire causes a serious drop in voltage, resulting in loss of power and possible tool damage. The smaller the wire’s gauge number, the greater the capacity of the cord. For example, a 14gauge cord can carry a higher current than a 16-gauge cord.
Main Parts of Drill Subassembly Top Handle Side Handle Speed Switch Chuck Trigger Carbon Brush Forward / Reverse Switch Chuck Key Assembly Instructions ⚠WARNING Make sure that the trigger is in the OFF position and unplug the tool from its electrical outlet before performing any procedure in this section.
Attaching the Handles 1. The side handle (21) can be attached to either side or to the top of the drill by threading it into the mounting holes in the housing (50). 2. The top handle can be set to one of three different positions (see Fig. B). 3. To adjust it, loosen the bolts, move the top handle to the desired position, and tighten the bolts (see Fig. B). 4. To attach the side handle in the front, the top handle needs to be rotated back in order for the side handle to thread into the top of the drill.
Drill Bit Installation This drill is designed to accept drill bits (not included) with shanks from 1/8” to 1/2”. Always use a drill bit that is designed for the specific drilling job. 1. Unplug the drill plug from the power source. 2. Rotate the chuck collar (1) to open the jaws (2) to a point where the opening is slightly larger than the bit size you intend to use (Fig. C). Raise the front of your drill chuck slightly to prevent the bit from falling out of the chuck jaws. 3.
Before Each Use ⚠WARNING Wear eye protection. Wear ear protection with impact drills. Exposure to noise can cause hearing loss. Hold power tools by insulated gripping surfaces, when performing an operation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Always make sure the chuck is tight and the drill bit is firmly tightened in the chuck before starting drill. Verify that the workpiece is properly secured.
holes location. This will prevent the drill bit from slipping off center as the hole is started. The workpiece to be drilled should be secured in a vise or with clamps to keep it from turning as the drill bit rotates. Be prepared for binding and bit breakthrough. When these situations occur, the drill bit has the tendency to grab the workpiece.
Drilling The workpiece to be drilled should be secured in a vise or with clamps to keep it from turning as the drill bit rotates (Fig E). 1. Check the drill bit to make sure it is firmly locked into the drill chuck and the forward/reverse switch is set in the forward position. 2. Hold the drill firmly with both hands whenever possible. Use one hand to grasp the rear of the handle and switch and the other to grasp the forward body of the drill. 3.
2. Fasten the screwdriver bit into the chuck, making sure the flats of the bit are gripped by the chuck jaws. 3. Open the chuck to remove the screw (Fig. F). 5. To remove the chuck, insert the short arm of a 1/4” hex key or larger, into the chuck and tighten it using the chuck key. 6. Tap the hex key sharply with a mallet (4) in a counter-clockwise direction to remove it (Fig. G). 7. Open the chuck jaws and remove the hex key from the chuck. 8. To reinstall the chuck, reverse the chuck removal steps.
After Each Use ⚠WARNING Do no touch the drill right after use. The drill will be hot. Do not remove the drill bits until the bit has cooled. Store the drill in dry and clean place. Keep the drill away from children. Maintenance ⚠WARNING Do not use solvents to clean the drill. Inspect the chuck and remove any dirt or debris. If the supply cord of this power tool is damaged, it must be replaced and only by a qualified service technician.
Troubleshooting Use the table below to troubleshoot problems before contacting service personnel or your local dealer. If the problem continues after troubleshooting, call your local dealer for assistance. Failure Possible Cause Corrective Action 1. Check that cord is plugged in. 3. Drill’s thermal reset breaker tripped (if equipped). 2. Check the power at the outlet. If the outlet is unpowered, turn off the drill and check the circuit breaker.
