Component Video Connections DVD+VCR Basic Operations Setup Connections Getting Started Use for superior picture quality when watching DVD movies. Before you begin, please note the following: • Your television must be equipped with Component Video inputs. • You can only watch the DVD player through the Component Video outputs. The VCR, tuner and menu system are only available through the RF Out or Line Out connection, see page 7.
Stereo Receiver Connections Follow these steps to connect the DVD+VCR to a stereo receiver: 1 Connect DVD+VCR to Stereo Receiver Connect stereo audio cables from the Line Out jacks on the back panel of the DVD+VCR to the line in jacks on your stereo receiver. 2 Select Line or Aux Set your stereo receiver to its Line or Aux input (refer to your stereo owner’s guide for the proper setting).
Connections Basic Operations Setup DVD+VCR Advanced Features Digital Audio Receiver Help Follow these steps to connect the DVD+VCR to an audio/video receiver. 1 Connect DVD+VCR to Audio Receiver Connect a coaxial digital audio cable from the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jacks on the back panel of the DVD+VCR to the matching digital audio input on your audio/video receiver. 2 Adjust Dolby/DTS Decoder Settings Set Dolby Digital Decoder and DTS Decoder in the menu system (required); see page 29.
Cable Box/Satellite Receiver Connections Follow these steps to connect a cable box or satellite receiver to your DVD+VCR: 1 Connect incoming cable to cable box Connect a coaxial cable from your cable TV or satellite jack to the input jack on your cable box/satellite receiver. 2 Connect cable box to DVD+VCR Connect a second coaxial cable from the output jack on the cable box/satellite receiver to the IN (FROM ANT.) jack on the back panel of the DVD+VCR.
Getting Started Connections Setup DVD+VCR Basic Operations Cable Box/ Satellite Receiver Advanced Features This connection method allows you to record from basic cable and watch scrambled channels simultaneously. However, you will not be able to record scrambled channels. 1 Connect incoming cable to DVD+VCR Connect a coaxial cable from your cable (CATV) or satellite wall outlet to the IN (FROM ANT.) jack on the back panel of the DVD+VCR.
DVR4300 DVD+VCR Other Audio/Video Connections DVD+VCR (Line In 1) Follow these steps to connect an external audio/video device, such as a camcorder or video game, to your DVD+VCR. The DVD+VCR will automatically detect when a device is plugged into the front line input; see “Automatic Input Switching” below. 1 Connect device to DVD+VCR Connect audio/video cables from the line outputs of your device to the line inputs on the rear (Line 1) or front (Line 2) of the DVD+VCR.
Setup Getting Started Chapter 3 :: About Menu Navigation Basic Operations Setup Connections The following keys are used to display and navigate the DVD+VCR menu system: SETUP/ENTER Press to display the menu system and confirm menu settings. Y Press to move up the list of menu items. B Press to move down the list of menu items. " Press to select or change menu options. A Press to return to the previous menu, or to exit from the menu system. CLEAR Press to erase settings.
3 4 As soon as you press SETUP/ENTER, the DVD+VCR will automatically perform the following steps: Auto Channel Search Automatically detects whether an antenna or cable is connected, then searches for all active channels in your area. Auto Clock Set Sets the DVD+VCR internal clock. This procedure may take a few minutes to complete. When finished, the DVD+VCR will display the lowest channel found.
RF Output Channel Connections Getting Started The RF Output Channel is the channel you tune your television to when using the DVD+VCR with an RF connection (see page 7). You can choose either channel 3 (the default setting) or 4. 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. 2 Press Y/B and " to select RF Output CH. 3 Press SETUP/ENTER to confirm that you would like to change the RF Output Channel; or press RETURN to cancel. 4 When prompted, tune your television to channel 3 or 4 and press SETUP/ ENTER.
:: VCR Setup For Channel Setup menu, please see page 23. Date/Time Stamp The Date/Time Stamp will superimpose the date and time on VHS recordings. 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. 2 Press Y/B and " to select VCR Setup Menu. 3 Press Y/B and " to select and set Date/Time Stamp as follows: TIMER The date, time, and record source will be stamped briefly at the start of timer recordings only. ALL The date, time, and record source will be stamped briefly at the start of all recordings.
Press Y/B and " to select and set Auto Play/Rewind as follows: BOTH Enables both Auto Play and Auto Rewind. PLAY Enables Auto Play only. Tapes without record safety tabs will play automatically when inserted. REW Enables Auto Rewind only. Tapes will rewind automatically at the end of the tape. NONE Disables both Auto Play and Auto Rewind. Getting Started 3 Auto Repeat Setup Connections Auto Repeat will automatically repeat playback of VHS tapes. 1 Press SETUP/ENTER.
:: Clock Setup Auto Clock Set Auto Clock Set will automatically seek the time in your area from stations broadcasting XDS (extended data services). If the time is set incorrectly, try setting Daylight Savings and Time Zone manually. If the time is not set at all, or if you are using the cable box hookup, turn off Auto Clock Set and set the clock manually; see page 22. 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. 2 Press Y/B and " to select Clock Setup Menu.
Time Zone Connections Getting Started If the DVD+VCR sets your clock incorrectly, try adjusting Time Zone manually. 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. 2 Press Y/B and " to select Clock Setup Menu. 3 Press Y/B and " to select and set Time Zone as follows: AUTO Automatically detects your local time zone. EASTERN Selects Eastern Standard Time. CENTRAL Selects Central Standard Time. MOUNTAIN Selects Mountain Standard Time. PACIFIC Selects Pacific Standard Time. ALASKA Selects Alaska Standard Time.
DVR4300 DVD+VCR Set Clock Manually If Auto Clock Set is not available in your area, follow these steps to set the clock manually. 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. 2 Press Y/B and " to select Clock Setup Menu. 3 Press Y/B and " to select and set Auto Clock Set to OFF. Time Zone and Clock Set Channel will be removed from the menu. 4 Press Y/B and " to select Set Clock. Set the date and time as follows: SET MONTH Enter the month as a 2-digit number; e.g., for January, press 01.
:: Channel Setup Getting Started Tuner Band Setup Connections Tuner Band tells the DVD+VCR whether you are using an antenna or cable (CATV) to receive incoming television signals. 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. 2 Press Y/B and " to select VCR Setup Menu. 3 Press Y/B and " to select Channel Setup Menu. 4 Press Y/B and " to select and set Tuner Band as follows: AUTO Automatically detects whether you are receiving channels from antenna or cable.
Show Weak Channels When you select channels with weak signals, you can choose to view a distorted picture or replace it with a blue screen. 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. 2 Press Y/B and " to select VCR Setup Menu. 3 Press Y/B and " to select Channel Setup Menu. 4 Press Y/B and " to select and set Weak Channels as follows: SHOW Channels with weak signal strength will be displayed. SKIP Channels with weak signal strength will be replaced by a blue screen.
:: DVD Setup Getting Started TV Aspect Ratio Basic Operations Setup Connections TV Aspect Ratio refers to the shape of your television, expressed as the length divided by the width of the screen. Standard television screens are 4:3, while widescreen televisions are 16:9. It is important to set the TV Aspect Ratio so DVD movies display at the appropriate size for your television. 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. 2 Press Y/B and " to select DVD Setup Menu.
Black Level Black Level allows you to set the reference level for black in the video signal: 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. 2 Press Y/B and " to select DVD Setup Menu. 3 Press Y/B and " to select and set Black Level as follows: LOW Enhanced black level for increased brightness/contrast when viewing DVDs. HIGH Standard NTSC reference black level for consistent brightness/contrast across all sources.
:: Language/Audio Setup Getting Started Audio Language Setup Connections Select your preferred language for DVD audio soundtracks: 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. • Make sure the DVD deck is stopped before pressing SETUP/ENTER. You will not be able to enter the DVD Setup menu if a DVD is playing. 2 Press Y/B and " to select DVD Setup Menu. 3 Press Y/B and " to select Language/Audio Setup. 4 Press Y/B and " to select Audio Language.
Disc Menu Language Select your preferred language for DVD disc menus: 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. • Make sure the DVD deck is stopped before pressing SETUP/ENTER. You will not be able to enter the DVD Setup menu if a DVD is playing. 2 Press Y/B and " to select DVD Setup Menu. 3 Press Y/B and " to select Language/Audio Setup. 4 Press Y/B and " to select Disc Menu Language. 5 Press Y/B and " to select the desired Disc Menu Language, and then press SETUP/ ENTER. • Select MORE to view additional languages.
Dolby Digital Decoder Setup Connections Getting Started If you have connected the DVD+VCR to an audio/video receiver equipped with a Dolby Digital Decoder, you must enable this feature in the menu system to enjoy Dolby Digital surround sound. 1 Press SETUP/ENTER. • Make sure the DVD deck is stopped before pressing SETUP/ENTER. You will not be able to enter the DVD Setup menu if a DVD is playing. 2 Press Y/B and " to select DVD Setup Menu. 3 Press Y/B and " to select Language/Audio Setup.
:: Rating Control Setup Set/Change Rating Level 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Press SETUP/ENTER. Press Y/B and " to select DVD Setup Menu. Press Y/B and " to select Rating Control. If the Enter Password screen appears, then Require Password has already been set to Yes. Skip to step 5. Press Y/B and " to select and set Require Password as follows: NO Indicates that Rating Control is disabled. YES Indicates that Rating Control is enabled, and a password is required to change Rating Control options.
Basic Operations Getting Started Chapter 4 Setup Connections :: Basic Disc Playback Advanced Features 2 3 4 Press EJECT on the remote control or front panel to open the disc drawer. The DVD+VCR will power on automatically when you open the disc drawer. Place the disc in the drawer with the label side facing up. If the disc has two sides, place the disc with the desired side facing up. Press EJECT again to close the disc drawer.
Additional Disc Playback Options • • • • • • • • To freeze playback, press PLAY/PAUSE "/||. To advance one frame at a time (DVD only), press SKIP/F.ADV. To resume normal playback, press PLAY/PAUSE "/||. To skip to the next or previous chapter/track, press FF "" or REW AA. To scan forward or backward at variable speeds, press and hold FF "" or REW AA during playback. To play in slow motion at variable speeds, first press PLAY/PAUSE "/||, and then press FF "".

:: Basic VCR Recording To Record to VHS Tape 1 DVR4300 DVD+VCR 2 3 4 34 Insert a standard VHS tape with a record safety tab into the VCR deck. • If the record safety tab is removed, the tape will eject if you try to record. Press SP/SLP to set the record speed to: SP Standard Play, for best quality. SLP Super Long Play, for maximum recording time (3 times longer than SP). Use the 0-9 keys or the CH Y/B keys to select the channel you wish to record. Press REC F to start recording.
Options During Recording Getting Started Setup • To pause recording, press PLAY/PAUSE "/||. To resume recording, press REC F again. To stop recording, press STOP J. To watch another television program while you are recording, press TV/ VCR to switch to TV mode, then select a different channel on your television. To watch a DVD while you are recording, press DVD to select the DVD deck, then press PLAY/PAUSE "/||.
:: Copying DVD to VHS DVR4300 DVD+VCR To copy a DVD to VHS tape 1 2 3 4 36 Insert the disc you wish to copy in the DVD deck and close the drawer. Insert a VHS tape with a record safety tab into the VCR deck. Press COPY on the DVD+VCR front panel. • The DVD will begin playback and the VCR will begin recording. • If the DVD disc menu appears, press PLAY/PAUSE "/|| to begin copying. When the DVD is finished playing, press VCR on the remote control and then press STOP J to end the copy.

Press SET TIMER. • If the clock has not been set, the Clock Setup Menu will appear. You MUST set the clock before you can program a Timer Recording (see page 22). Press Y/B and " or use the 0-9 keys as directed to: • Choose an event number (1-8). • Set the event date and time (month, day, hour, minute, and AM/PM) • Set the event length (hours and minutes).
• The Timer indicator will light when an event is programmed. If there is an error, the Timer indicator will blink (see Timer Recording Errors below). • To delete an event, use Y/B and " to select it, then press CLEAR. Timer Recording Errors Tape Missing Insert a VHS tape in the VCR deck. Tape Missing Tab Insert a VHS tape with a record safety tab. Deck Not Ready The tape in the VCR deck is already in use. Select the VCR deck, then press STOP J.
:: MP3 Playback MP3 is a popular music format which allows you to compress music files up to 1/12 of their original size while retaining near CD quality sound. Your DVDVCR can playback MP3 files burned onto a CD-R/RW disc. 1 Insert a CD-R/RW disc with MP3 files into the DVD deck. The MP3 main menu will appear after a few seconds and the first song on the disc will begin playing. 2 Press Y/B to select the folder on the CD-R/RW which contains the MP3 files you want to hear, then press SETUP/ENTER to select.

Advanced Features Getting Started Chapter 5 Connections :: Special Playback Features Title/Chapter/Time Setup DVDs are organized into Titles (movies) and Chapters (individual scenes), while CDs are organized into Tracks (songs). To jump to a specific Title, Chapter or Time on your disc: 1 Press DISPLAY during DVD/CD playback. 2 Press A/" to select Title, Chapter or Time. 3 Press Y/B to select from all available Titles or Chapters on the disc.
Zoom To zoom in at two or four times normal magnification during DVD playback: 1 Press ZOOM during DVD playback to display the magnifying glass. 2 Press Y/B and A/" to move the magnifying glass. 3 Press SETUP/ENTER repeatedly to zoom in at 2X, 4X, 2X, then back to normal magnification. • The Zoom feature is not available during VCD playback. Subtitle Many DVDs contain subtitles in multiple languages. To select among all available subtitle languages: 1 Press SUBTITLE during DVD playback.
3D Sound Setup Connections Getting Started 3D Audio is an enhanced audio mode that creates the illusion of Surround Sound with only two speakers. This feature uses Spatializer N-2-2 digital virtual surround processing. To activate 3D Sound: 1 Press 3D SOUND during DVD playback. 2 Press Y/B to turn 3D Sound On or Off. 3 Press SETUP/ENTER again to confirm your selection. • Portions of this product are licensed from Desper Products, Inc., a subsidiary of Spatializer Audio Laboratories, Inc.
• The minimum A-B Repeat time is 5 seconds. Bookmarks Bookmarks allow you to jump quickly to your favorite scenes in a DVD movie. To set up to three bookmarks: 1 Press MARK during DVD playback. 2 Press A/" to move to one of the three bookmark placeholders (- - -). The selected placeholder will blink. 3 Press SETUP/ENTER at the beginning of the scene you want to mark. The placeholder will change to a number (1, 2 or 3) and the bookmark is set. 4 Press MARK to exit.
Getting Started About Index Marks Index Search/Scan To search or scan for specific recordings: 1 Insert a VHS tape with recorded material in the VCR deck. 2 While the tape is stopped or playing, press SEARCH/INDEX. 3 Press Y/B and " to select Index Search/Scan: Index Scan Press FF "" or REW AA to begin scanning forward or backward. When an Index Mark is found, the tape will play for 5 seconds. If it is the scene you want, press PLAY/PAUSE "/||.
Blank Search Blank Search makes it easy to find the next available blank (unrecorded) space on your VHS tapes. 1 Insert a VHS tape with recorded material in the VCR deck. 2 While the tape is stopped or playing, press SEARCH/INDEX. 3 Press Y/B and " to select Blank Search. 4 If the DVD+VCR finds blank tape, it will stop automatically at the beginning of the blank segment. Direct Time Search Direct Time Search locates a specific tape counter position in hours, minutes and seconds.
:: Troubleshooting Customer Service Information Setup The FAQs below will help you solve common issues with your DVD+VCR. You cannot access the Setup menu while a disc is playing. No sound from speakers. • Connect the DVD+VCR to a Dolby Digital-ready amplifier.
DVR4300 DVD+VCR Auto Setup did not find all channels. • If a cable box is connected, the DVD+VCR will only find the cable box output channel. Use the alternative cable box hookup. No audio when playing VHS tapes. • You may be watching video from the S-Video or Component video output. Use the RF or Line connection to play VHS tapes. No picture. • Press TV/VCR until the VCR indicator lights on the front panel display. • Set RF Output to channel 4; see page 17. Poor picture quality on VCR.
Power button blinking. • Unit is in Auto Power Off mode. If you press POWER while rewinding, copying, Timer Recording or OneTouch Recording, the unit will automatically turn off when that function is complete. • Press POWER to toggle Auto Power on and off. No stereo sound. • Connect TV and DVD+VCR with audio/video cables. If your TV and DVD+VCR are connected with an RF coaxial cable, you will only hear stereo sound if the DVD+VCR is turned off.
