Chapter 1 Getting Started This chapter introduces you to the external components of your device and guides you through the process of setting up your device for use. Identifying Hardware Components Front Components Ref Component Description Camera lens Takes still photos or records video clips. The front lens supports 8 MP with fixed focus. Light sensor Senses the ambient light for automatic adjustments of the display backlight.
Ref Component Power Description Lights blue when the device is turned on. Blinks blue when the device is in Sleep mode. RF (Radio Frequency) Blinks blue when the RF radio of any RF feature (WLAN/Bluetooth/WWAN) is on. Battery Charge Lights amber when the battery is being charged. Lights green when battery charging is completed. Blinks green to indicate the battery’s built-in high temperature protection mechanism is activated. Blinks red when the battery’s capacity is below 10%.
Ref Component Description Camera lens Takes still photos or records video clips. The rear lens supports 12 MP with auto focus. Fingerprint scanner (optional) Serves as the fingerprint verification, preventing unauthorized access to your device. Speaker Plays music, sounds and voices. Top Components Ref Component Description Barcode scanner Scans barcodes. (See “Using the Barcode Scanner” lens (optional) in Chapter 4 for more information.
Ref Component Description Depending on your model, it serves as one of the below functions. - Trigger button for the barcode scanner. - Shutter button for the camera. NOTE: The hardware buttons (except the power button) can be re-defined using Getac Settings. Bottom Components Ref Component Description WWAN passConnects the external antenna for WWAN (wireless through connector wide area network) connectivity.
Left-Side Components Ref Component Tether holder Description For holding a tether. There is one holder on the left side and another on the right side. MicroSD card slot (inside the cover) Accepts a microSD card for removable storage. SIM card slot (optional) (inside the cover) Accepts a SIM card for the WWAN function. Power connector Connects to the AC adapter.
Getting Your Device Ready for Use Installing the SIM Card (Select Models Only) 1. Loosen the screw and flip open the cover. 2. W ith the SIM card’s chip side facing the back of the device and the beveled corner pointing to the slot, insert the card all the way into the slot. NOTE: To remove the SIM card, slightly push in the card to release it and then pull the card out of the slot. 3. Close the cover and tighten the screw. 4.
CAUTION: When closing the cover, you must firmly press all over the cover to ensure its sealing capability. And keep the screw tightened to protect against external impacts. To ensure IP67 protection performance, always have the cover closed with the screw tightened unless you need to open it for inserting or removing a card. Connecting to AC Power and Charging the Battery NOTE: The battery is shipped to you in power saving mode that protects it from charging/discharging.
2. The charge indicator glows in amber when charging is in progress. Do not disconnect your device from AC power until the battery is fully charged, as indicated by the amber indicator turning into green. This will take a couple of hours. Performing the Initial Startup NOTE: You must use AC power when starting up the device for the very first time. When turning on your device for the very first time, you will be guided through a setup process. 1. Make sure that your device is connected to AC power. 2.
Chapter 2 Basic Skills This chapter familiarizes you with the basic operations of your device. CAUTION: Do not expose your skin to the device when operating it in a very hot or cold environment. The device can get uncomfortably warm when you use it in high temperatures. As a safety precaution in such a circumstance, do not place the device on your lap or touch it with your bare hands for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn.
Navigating on the Screen CAUTION: Do not use a sharp object such as a ballpoint pen or pencil on the touchscreen. Doing so may damage the touchscreen surface. Use your finger to navigate and select objects on the screen. Here are some common terms that you should know when using the touchscreen: Tap Touch the screen once with your finger to open an item or select an object. Tap and hold Touch and hold your finger on an item to see a list of actions available for that item.
Touch Mode You can change the touch mode to suit your scenario. To quickly switch the mode, touch one of the widgets on the Home screen. Select this if you are using the stylus. This mode responds to finger touches as well. Select this when liquids (such as raindrops) are falling on the screen and should be rejected as input. Use your finger in this mode. NOTE: The stylus should be a capacitive-tipped stylus (purchased separately).
To return to the Home screen at any time, tap the Home icon side or bottom side of the screen. at the right You can add app icons, shortcuts, widgets, and other items to any part of the Home screen where there’s free space. Using Applications Swipe up from the bottom of the Home screen to open the All Apps screen. The screen holds icons for all of the apps on your device. Tap an icon to open the app.
Status Bar The Status Bar appears at the top of almost every screen. It displays icons indicating the current status (on the right) and icons indicating that you’ve received notifications (on the left), along with the current time. Quick Settings and Notifications Panel You can open Quick Settings and Notifications Panel by swiping down from the top of the screen. Quick Settings allow you to quickly change common settings such as screen brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, and others.
Entering Information You enter text, numbers, and symbols using the virtual keyboard. To show the virtual keyboard on the screen whenever you tap an input field, go to Settings System Languages & input Physical keyboard and enable Show virtual keyboard. Your device has tw o virtual keyboards (Gboard and GetacIM E). Tap switch between the two keyboards. to Gboard: This is the default Google keyboard. GetacIME: This is a virtual keyboard developed by Getac.
Chapter 3 Getting Connected This chapter tells you how you can get your device connected through a variety of ways. Wireless Connections Using WWAN (Select Models Only) NOTE: Your model only supports data transmission. Voice transmission is not supported. Select models support LTE and UMTS connectivity. Mobile network is enabled by default. The icons in the Status Bar indicate which kind of data network you’re connected to and the network signal strength. To check or modify settings: Open Quick Settings.
Using Wi-Fi Networks Turning On/Off the Wi-Fi Radio Open Quick Settings and tap the Wi-Fi icon. - or Go to Settings Network & internet. Tap the On or Off position of the switch. When the Wi-Fi radio is turned on, the icon appears in the status bar. If your device finds a network that you connected to previously, it connects to it. Connecting to a Wi-Fi Network 1. Make sure the Wi-Fi radio is on (as described in the previous section). 2. Open Quick Settings. Tap and hold the Wi-Fi icon.
Using the Bluetooth Function NOTE: Getac does not guarantee the product’s compatibilities with the Bluetooth headsets/devices from all manufacturers. Turning On/Off the Bluetooth Radio Open Quick Settings and tap the Bluetooth icon. - or Go to Settings Connected devices Pair. Pairing with a Bluetooth Device The first time you use a new Bluetooth device with your device, you must “ pair ” them, so that they know how to connect securely to each other.
External Connections Connecting to a Computer via USB You can connect your device to a computer with the USB cable, to transfer files between your device and the computer. Use the USB cable (available to you as an option) to connect the device to a USB port on your computer. Using a MicroSD Card Inserting a MicroSD Card 1. Loosen the screw and flip open the cover. 2. Insert the card into the slot, with the golden contacts pointing to the slot and facing rear.
3. Close the cover and tighten the screw. CAUTION: When closing the cover, you must firmly press all over the cover to ensure its sealing capability. And keep the screw tightened to protect against external impacts. To ensure IP67 protection performance, always have the cover closed with the screw tightened unless you need to open it for inserting or removing a card. Removing MicroSD card You can safely remove the microSD card from your device any time the device is shut down.
Chapter 4 Getac Applications In addition to Android preinstalled apps from Google, several apps are added to your device by Getac. This chapter describes these Getac apps. NOTE: For instructions on using the preinstalled apps from Google, check Google official website for online help. You can use Update Center to update Getac apps to the latest version. (See “Updating Getac Apps” in Chapter 5 for information.) Getac Camera Use the Getac Camera app to take photos and record videos.
Taking Photos 1. Open the Getac Camera app. If you are in Video mode, tap to switch to Camera mode. Set t ings Photo view Video mode Shutter Control butt ons Zoom control A white circle will appear briefly in the center, indicating the focus area. 2. To focus on a specific area: Tap the area in the preview window. A white focus frame appears. When the color of the frame changes to green, it means focus is completed. If the color changes to red, it means a failed focus.
Recording Videos 1. Open the Getac Camera app. If you are in Camera mode, tap to switch to Video mode. Set t ings Video playback Camera mode Record Control butt ons Zoom control 2. A white circle will appear briefly in the center, indicating the focus area. 3. To focus on a specific area: Tap the area in the preview window. A white focus frame appears. If you want to capture a still image while recording, tap 6. To stop recording, tap . . 7. An image from your most recent video is displayed as a thumbnail at the corner. You can tap the thumbnail to view the video. The video will be saved as a MP4 file in the predefined folder. The file is saved to the internal storage of your device. Control Buttons Any setting change remains valid until you change it again.
Button Description To select an exposure value from the available choices. Exposur e Value NOTE: You can set this item only when the Manual mode is disabled. To select an ISO speed from the available choices. Shutter Speed NOTE: You can set this item only when the Manual mode is enabled. To select a flash mode for photo taking. Tap to cycle through the choices. The icon indicates the current status.
Camera Settings While in Getac Camera, tap at the top left corner to open Settings. Item Description Camera Double tap capture To set if you can take the photo by double tapping where you want to focus in the preview window. Timer To set the countdown timer for taking the photo. Angle To set if the device orientation angle is displayed in the preview window. HDR (High Dynamic Range) To enable or disable the High Dynamic Range feature.
Item Description Photo Stamp Date To select the date format or to select None when you don’t want the stamp to include the date. Time To select the time format or to select None when you don’t want the stamp to include the time. GPS To enable or disable the adding of geographical information (if available) in the stamp. Text To add text in the stamp. Type the text in the input field. Otherwise, select None. Sound Shutter sound To enable or disable the shutter sound played upon photo taking.
File Browser The File Browser app allows you to organize your data in the internal SD card and any connected external storage (such as a microSD card or USB disk). W ith File Browser, you can: View, delete, copy and paste, move, and rename files/folders. Share files of the same type with others through an available sharing option. Bookmark your favorite files/folders. Open a file as long as it is supported by your device.
The directory categories are: Home: The default home directory is the root directory of the internal storage. You can specify a folder to be your home directory. (See “File Browser Settings” for information.) Local: This shows the internal storage. SD Card/USB Disk: You will see the item if a removable storage device is inserted. Bookmarks: This shows the file(s)/folder(s) you have bookmarked. Recent Files: This shows the files you have recently opened in File Browser.
Current path 4. To view the properties of a file/folder, tap the menu that pops up, tap File property. at the end of the item. In Managing Files/Folders Selecting Files/Folders 1. Browse to the desired folder. 2. Single selection: Tap the checkbox to the left of the item name. Multiple selection: Tap each checkbox to the left of the item name. Select all: Tap the checkbox at the top of the item list. 3. When item(s) are selected, the action bar appears at the top of the item list.
To abandon the selection and close the action bar, tap Cancel. To act on the selected item(s), see the relevant section below. Deleting Files/Folders 1. Select the desired item(s) as described earlier in “Selecting Files/Folders”. 2. To delete the selected item(s), tap in the action bar. Moving Files/Folders 1. Select the desired item(s) as described earlier in “Selecting Files/Folders”. 2. To move the selected item(s), tap in the action bar. 3. Specify the destination folder in the popup window.
Sharing File(s) NOTE: The maximum number of files to be shared at one time is 100. 1. Browse to the folder containing the file(s) you want to share. 2. Single file sharing: There is no need to select the item you want to share. Simply tap to the right of the item name. If you have already selected the item, tap in the action bar. Multiple files sharing: You can only share files of the same type at one time. Select the files as described earlier in “Selecting Files/Folders”. Then, tap in the action bar. 3.
A white star indicates that the item is bookmarked. The bookmarked item(s) will appear in the Bookmark directory for your quick access. NOTE: The maximum number of bookmarks is 50. To cancel bookmark(s): You can cancel the bookmark of an item either in the Bookmark directory or in the folder where the item is located. Tap the white star of the item to cancel the bookmark. Opening a File When you tap a filename, File Browser tries to open or execute the file depending on the file type.
File Browser Settings Tap Settings in File Browser to configure the settings. Item Display Description To enable or disable the display of the following data: Hidden files File date File size Directory To specify the home directory. Tap Home directory and select the folder. Tap a folder name to go down one level.
GetacIME GetacIME (Input Method Editor) is a virtual keyboard that features: QWERY keyboard Text scanner Barcode scanner NOTE: When you use Text Scanner or Barcode Scanner for the very first time, you will be prompted to download GMS Library. Connect your device to the Internet and follow the onscreen instructions. When you use Text Scanner for the very first time, you will be asked to allow some actions. Tap ALLOW when asked.
4. You can expand the scan window (in landscape view only). You can turn on the torch if needed. Reduce Expand Torch on/off 5. Aim the rear camera lens at the target. The device will automatically focus. If there is an area you want to focus, tap the area in the scan window. 6. Tap the Capture button to detect text and barcodes. Capture 7. Detected text will be highlighted in red and barcode(s) in green.
9. Tap the cell that contains the text string you want to enter. To cancel the operation or start a new scan, tap . 10. When finished using the tool, tap X to close the scan window. Using the Barcode Scanner Barcode Scanner is a barcode scanning and decoding tool. It can scan barcodes with either the rear camera or the barcode scanner lens (select models only). NOTE: Most common 1D and 2D symbologies are supported.
NOTE: The scan beam also turns off after timeout. Barcode Scanning Using the GetacIME Keyboard 1. Place the insertion point (or called cursor) where you want the data to be entered. 2. If you are not in the GetacIME keyboard, tap 3. When GetacIME is open, tap to switch to it. . 4. If your model comes with the barcode scanner, you can choose between Device Scanner and Camera Scanner. Using Device Scanner: Tap the Capture button on the screen or press the Fn button on your device.
5. The decoded barcode data is entered. 6. When finished using the tool, tap X to close the scan window. GetacIME Settings To open GetacIME Settings, use one of the below methods: When GetacIME is open, tap Go to Settings System Languages & input Virtual keyboard GetacIME. to access its settings menu. Item Description Sound Keypress sound To enable or disable the typing sound whenever a key is pressed.
Item Description Barcode Barcode prefix/suffix To add character(s) before/after each decoded data string. Besides alphanumeric characters, you can enter character code(s) such as \n, \t, \b, and \r. Tap Custom Text, enter the character(s) in the input field, and tap OK. Encoding type To specify the codepage for mapping the character codes to characters.
NFC Reader (Select Models Only) NOTE: For enhanced applications and customization of the NFC reader, contact your authorized Getac dealer. To read information from NFC tags: 1. Tap the Getac Settings app icon , which can be found in the default Home screen, the Getac folder, and the All Apps screen. 2. Tap NFC reader Scan NFC tag. 3. Bring the tag near the RFID antenna. Location of internal RFID antenna 4. The scanned data is displayed on the screen.
Chapter 5 Managing Your Device This chapter tells you how to manage power and configure your device. Managing Power The operating time of a fully charged battery depends on how you are using the device. Some functions, such as using multimedia or operating an SD card, may consume the battery power considerably. NOTE: The battery has a high temperature protection mechanism which limits the maximum charge of the battery to 80% of its total capacity in the event of high temperature conditions.
You should save your data and recharge the battery immediately upon a warning of low power; otherwise your device will turn off automatically. You need to connect the device to external AC power for charging before you can use it again. Power-Saving Tips You can extend your battery’s life between charges by turning off features that you don’t need. You can also monitor how apps and system resources consume battery power. Enable Battery Saver. Turn off radios that you aren’t using.
Settings NOTE: Make sure that you fully understand the function of a certain item before any adjustment. Some setting items are available only for specific models or apps you have in your device. System Settings The Settings app contains most of the tools for customizing and configuring your device. To open Settings, use any of the below methods: Open Quick Settings and tap the Settings icon Open the All Apps screen and tap Settings. .
The following table describes the configurable items. Item Description Physical buttons To assign a function or app to a hardware button on your device. Tap a button name and select from the (-) Minus Button available options in the popup menu. Fn Button (+) Plus Button LTE All support firmware To select the LTE module firmware that matches your mobile network operator. If your operator is not listed in the menu, select GENERIC.
Item Description Dock Antenna To set if you want to use the external antenna of the dock (when connected). You can also enable the auto switch function. Audio To specify which audio output to use when docked. NFC NFC reader To read information from NFC tags. (See “NFC Reader (Select Models Only)” in Chapter 4 for detailed information.) Battery Charging Mode Standard/ Balanced/ Temperature protection mode To select the charging mode. Options are: Standard mode: The battery will be fully charged.
Update Center Use Update Center to check and update the OS (Operating System) and Getac apps. You can have the updates downloaded automatically or download them manually. To open the app, tap the Update Center app icon in the Getac folder and the All Apps screen. , which can be found When opening the app for the very first time, you will be asked to allow the installation. Tap the on/off switch to turn it on and then tap to continue.
Updating the OS After opening Update Center, tap OS image. The information you see depends on the current status of your device. You will see this screen if the OS is up to date. You will see this screen if an update is found available at the server. Tap DOWNLOAD NOW. After the download is completed, a window pops up to inform you. Tap UPDATE in the popup windows. You will see this popup window if an update has already been automatically downloaded. Tap UPDATE.
You will see this screen if there has been an interruption due to some server connection problem. Make sure the there is no connection problem and tap CHECK. NOTE: Alternatively, you can update the OS using a file you have obtained. Tap UPDATE FROM FILE and select the location where the file is stored. When the update is completed, you will be prompted to restart the device. Updating Getac Apps After opening Update Center, tap Application.
Update Center Settings While in Update Center, tap Settings to enable/disable notifications and automatic download. Item Receive notification Description To determine if you will receive the notification of an OS or Getac app update. Never: You will not be notified. Major updates only: You will be notified only if the update is a major one. All updates: You will be notified of any available update. You can tap the notification in the Notifications Panel to act on the notification.
Restart or Hard Reboot Restart To restart the device, press and hold the power button until a menu pops up. Then tap Restart. If the device somehow cannot display the power off menu, you can force the device to power off by pressing and holding the power button for more than 8 seconds. Then start up the device by pressing and holding the power button for at least 3 seconds. Hard Reboot In case the device is completely unresponsive, you can perform a hard reboot to solve the problem.
Chapter 6 Care and Maintenance This chapter provides guidelines on taking care of your device. Caring for Your Device Taking good care of your device will ensure trouble-free operation and reduce the risk of damage to your device. Keep your device away from excessive moisture and extreme temperatures. Avoid exposing your device to direct sunlight or strong ultraviolet light for extended periods of time. Do not place anything on top of your device or drop objects on your device.
Do not use paper towels to clean the screen. Never attempt to disassemble, repair or make any modifications to your device. Disassembly, modification or any attempt at repair could cause damage to your device and even bodily injury or property damage and will void the warranty. Do not store or carry flammable liquids, gases or explosive materials in the same compartment as your device, its parts or accessories.
Chapter 7 Regulatory Information NOTE: Marking labels located on the exterior of your device indicate the regulations that your model complies with. Please check the marking labels on your device and refer to the corresponding statements in this chapter. Some notices apply to specific models only.
