Important Safety Precautions and Explanation of Symbols ! The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the presence of important installation, operation, and service instructions in this manual. The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the user to the presence of uninsulated dangerous voltages within the enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electrical shock to the user.
Protect power supply cables from being pinched, walked on, or otherwise damaged. Be especially careful where the power cable enters the power outlet and the unit. Only connect the XPR-5 an electrical outlet or extension cord of appropriate type and rating. MOST power strips and extension cords are NOT sufficient to safely supply the power required by the XPR-5.

XPR-5 Introduction From the moment you encounter our new XPR-5 in person, you’ll know it is no ordinary power amplifier. The XPR-5 is different from anything we’ve ever done before. It’s Reference by Emotiva, and you have to see it and hear it to believe it. The XPR-5 faceplate is made of 25 millimeters of solid billet aluminum; tooled, machined, engraved, and finished like fine jewelry.
XPR-5 About This Manual This manual will provide you with all the information you need to get superb sound (and many years of reliable service) from your XPR-5 Five-Channel Reference Power Amplifier. We suggest that you read through the entire manual; we kept things as short and direct as possible. Even if you’re an expert user, you will probably find some interesting information and useful suggestions.
XPR-5 Features The XPR-5 five-channel reference power amplifier is a true audiophile amplifier optimized for use in high-end home theater and surround sound systems. It combines the power, reliability, and superb sound quality of a great audiophile amplifier with the features and aesthetics of a true audio showpiece.
XPR-5 Unpacking Your XPR-5 was carefully packed and should reach you in perfect condition. If you notice any shipping damage or other issues when you unpack it, please contact Emotiva immediately. Gently remove your XPR-5 from the packing carton and remove all wrappings and shipping material. XPR-5 Quick Start To get the most from your XPR-5, we urge you to read the entire manual. If you just can’t wait to listen to it, this section will cover the basics you need to get started. • • • • • • Find a secure location for your XPR-5. Make sure you choose a stand or shelf that can support the full weight of the XPR-5 safely. Connect your XPR-5 to a signal source. Connect your XPR-5 to five 8 ohm or 4 ohm speakers using reasonably heavy gauge speaker wires (at least 14 gauge).
XPR-5 Connections ! A word about safety The XPR-5 is capable of delivering large voltages and currents at its speaker terminals. If the speaker terminals or speaker cables are inadvertently shorted to each other, to interconnect cables, or to ground while music is playing, the XPR-5 can cause damage to associated equipment, and may pose a risk of electric shock. • • • • Ensure that the XPR-5 is powered Off before changing any connections.
XPR-5 Connecting an input source to your XPR-5 Your XPR-5 amplifier has a separate balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) inputs for each channel; a switch selects which input is active for each channel. Be sure to set this switch correctly for each channel. We suggest using high-quality interconnect cables, keeping cables no longer than necessary, and avoiding running signal cables near power cables and speaker cables whenever possible.
XPR-5 Configuration and Operation Line Voltage The XPR-5 can operate from line voltages of 115 VAC +/- 10% or 230 VAC +/- 10%. The Input Voltage switch is located on the back panel (between the power cord inlet and power switch), and is covered by a small plastic plate to prevent unintentional changes. Verify that the switch is set to the correct voltage for your location and change it if necessary. AC Power Switch (rear panel) The rear-panel AC Power switch controls the main AC power for your XPR-5.
XPR-5 Care and Maintenance Periodic Maintenance The XPR-5 power amplifier requires no periodic maintenance or calibration. Cleaning the XPR-5 • • • If necessary, the XPR-5 should be cleaned gently with a soft rag. If something sticky gets on the front panel or case of the XPA-5, it should be cleaned with a mild cleaning solution applied to a soft rag, followed by wiping with a clean rag dampened with plain water and drying with a soft dry rag or cloth.

XPR-5 Troubleshooting The XPR-5 is carefully designed and manufactured from high-quality precision components to ensure years of trouble free operation. We really doubt you’ll ever have any problems with your XPR-5 but, if you do, here are a few things you could try: Problem: No sound is heard from either (any) channel (nothing is lit). Reason: You have no AC power. • • • Verify that the rear panel AC Power switch is On. Verify that your circuit is live.
XPR-5 Problem: No sound is heard (the Standby LED is flashing red and one or more rows of Channel Status and LED Bargraph Meter LEDs are flashing red). Reason: The XPR-5 is in Protect mode, which indicates a Fault condition. • • • Switch the AC Power switch Off and On to clear the Fault condition. If the fault remains, look for a shorted speaker cable or damaged speaker. Check your sources and source connections (a bad interconnect, DC on the input, or an otherwise bad source component can cause a fault).
