Description of operating controls and connecting terminals Page 14 of 24 1 SUBWOOFER LEVEL The subwoofer volume control should be adjusted to match the main speaker volume of your hifi or home cinema system. As a general rule, subwoofer performance should not dominant the sound. Excessive bass leads to a smeared soundstage and can result in unpleasant resonances at certain frequencies. 2 CROSSOVER FREQUENCY Used to adjust the frequency at which the subwoofer crosses over.
Description of operating controls and connecting terminals Page 15 of 24 7 SPEAKER LEVEL IN Input jacks for connecting the ELAC subwoofer to the loudspeaker output of a power amp or surround receiver (please see following chapter). Bass signals, that go to the LINE LEVEL IN & SPEAKER LEVEL IN are both reproduced through the subwoofer. The SPEAKER LEVEL IN uses a floating, symmetrical circuit designed to make the subwoofer operate like a passive loudspeaker.
Subwoofer connection Page 16 of 24 Use RCA phono plugs and/or loudspeaker cable to connect the subwoofer to a hi-fi system or home cinema set. The following options will give an idea of different applications. Careful consideration should be given to the user’s manuals of the AV amplifier and the loudspeakers used in the set-up.
Subwoofer connection Page 17 of 24 Digital home cinema set Bass management within the subwoofer In this example, the loudspeaker outputs of the AV receiver should be connected to the SPEAKER LEVEL IN connectors on the subwoofer using speaker cables. The corresponding loudspeakers (centre and left & right front) should then be set to LARGE in the AV receiver’s menu. Then select SUBWOOFER YES on the AV receiver’s menu and connect the AV receiver SUB OUT to the LINE LEVEL IN socket on the subwoofer.
Subwoofer connection Page 18 of 24 Hi-fi / stereo system: Bass support for hi-fi loudspeakers In this example stereo loudspeakers receive the full frequency signal directly from the amplifier, with the subwoofer giving support in the low bass. As a rule, the subwoofer’s crossover frequency should not be set too low. This ensures a substantial overlap with the main speakers, and at the same time maintains moderate subwoofer levels. Testing will determine the best polarity for your needs.
Set-up tips Page 19 of 24 General advice • 10 cm minimum free space between the subwoofer and the wall is required for proper cabling and cooling. • Some ELAC subwoofers are down-firing or provide a bass diaphragm on the bottom. Therefore, they are available with rubber feet/spikes. On shag carpets, the rubber feet should be replaced by spikes. The distance between the subwoofer bottom and the floor should be at least 25 mm.
Set-up tips Page 20 of 24 listener than the main speakers (max 1m). A larger distance is better (i.e. a position behind the main speakers up to approx. 1m, or from special subwoofer outputs and when reproducing surround video effects up to 3m.) In addition to maximum sound pressure, the bass quality can be improved by using a pair of ELAC subwoofers.
ESP Page 21 of 24 A special feature of your ELAC subwoofer is ESP. It provides clear bass reproduction and ensures that there are no distortions from overdriving the amplifier and / or the drive units. ELAC’s ESP® is a frequency and power dependent electronic stabilization programme. ELAC’s subwoofers perform similarly to a that of a car, where the electronic stabilization programme controls the car’s stability to keep it in it’s lane in all situations.
