Working on Your Computer 1 Before Working Inside Your Computer Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your personal safety. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure included in this document assumes that the following conditions exist: • You have read the safety information that shipped with your computer. • A component can be replaced or--if purchased separately--installed by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.
3. If the computer is connected to a docking device (docked) such as the optional Media Base or Battery Slice, undock it. CAUTION: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device. 4. Disconnect all network cables from the computer. 5. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets. 6. Close the display and turn the computer upside-down on a flat work surface.
Turning Off Your Computer CAUTION: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer. 1. Shut down the operating system: – In Windows 8.1: * Using a touch-enabled device: * a. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, opening the Charms menu and select Settings. b. Select the and then select Shut down. Using a mouse: a. Point to upper-right corner of the screen and click Settings. b. Click the and select Shut down.

Removing the Battery 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working On Your Computer. 2. Slide the release latches to unlock position and pull the battery to remove from the computer. Installing the Battery 1. Insert the battery into its slot until the battery clicks into place. 2. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Card 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working on Your Computer. 2. Remove the battery.
3. Press in to release the SIM card and pull the SIM card out to remove from the computer. Installing the SIM Card 1. Insert the SIM card into its slot on the computer and press till it clicks in place. 2. Install the battery. 3. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the Base Cover 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working On Your Computer. 2. Remove the battery.
3. Perform the following steps to remove the base cover from the computer: a) Remove the screws that secure the base cover to the computer. b) Pry the edges of the base cover and remove the base cover from the computer. Installing the Base Cover 1. Align the edges of the base cover on the computer and press it on the computer until it snaps in place. 2. Tighten the screws to secure the base cover to the computer. 3. Install the battery. 4.
Installing the Memory 1. Insert the memory module into the memory socket and press until the memory module click in to place. 2. Install the: a) base cover b) battery 3. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the Keyboard Trim 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. Pry up the keyboard trim starting from the bottom and work your way along the top edge.
3. Remove the keyboard trim from the computer. Installing the Keyboard Trim 1. Align the keyboard trim to its place. 2. Press along the sides of the keyboard trim until it snaps in place. 3. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. NOTE: You may also need to press the center of the keyboard trim to install the keyboard trim in its place. Removing the Keyboard 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working On Your Computer. 2.
3. Remove the screws that secure the keyboard to the computer. 4. Slide and lift the keyboard from the computer to access the keyboard cable.
5. Flip over the keyboard, disconnect the keyboard cable from its connector, and remove the keyboard from the computer. Installing the Keyboard 1. Connect the keyboard cable to its connector on the computer. 2. Install the keyboard in its place. 3. Tighten the screws to secure the keyboard to the computer. 4. Install the: a) keyboard trim b) battery 5. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the Coin-Cell Battery 1.

Perform the following steps to remove the coin-cell battery from the computer: a) Disconnect the coin-cell battery cable from the system board. b) Pull the coin-cell battery to detach the adhesive underneath which attaches it to the computer. c) Remove the coin-cell battery from the computer. Installing the Coin-Cell Battery 1. Connect the coin-cell battery cable to the system board. 2. Press down the coin-cell battery on the computer. 3. Install the: a) base cover b) battery 4.

Perform the following steps to remove the audio-connector board from the computer: a) Disconnect the audio-connector board cable from the system board. b) Remove the screw that secures the audio-connector board to the computer. c) Lift and remove the audio-connector board from the computer. Installing the Audio-Connector Board 1. Place the audio-connector board in its slot on the computer. 2. Tighten the screw to secure the audio-connector board to the computer. 3.
3. Perform the following steps to remove the hard drive from the computer: a) Remove the screws that secure the hard drive to the computer. Slide the hard drive to disconnect from its connector on the system board. b) Lift and remove the hard drive from the computer. Installing the Hard Drive 1. Align the hard drive on its bay on the computer. 2. Slide the hard drive into its connector on the system board. 3. Tighten the screws to secure the hard drive to the computer. 4.
3. Disconnect the speaker cable from the system board [1]. Un-route the speaker cable from its channels on the computer [2]. 4. Dislodge the speaker tabs from the holders on the computer [1]. Lift and remove the speakers from the computer [2]. Installing the Speakers 1. Place the speakers in its compartments and route the cable through the channels. 2. Press down on the speakers till the tabs on the speakers snap onto the holders on the computer. 3. Connect the speaker cable to the system board.
4. Install the: a) base cover b) battery 5. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Card 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working on Your Computer. 2. Remove the: a) battery b) base cover 3. Remove the adhesive tape that secures the antenna cables to the WLAN card. 4.
5. Install the: a) base cover b) battery 6. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) Card 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working on Your Computer. 2. Remove the: a) battery b) base cover 3. Remove the adhesive tape that prevents the antenna cables to the WWAN card. 4. Perform the following steps to remove the WWAN card: a) Disconnect the antenna cables from the WWAN card.
5. Install the: a) base cover b) battery 6. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the System Fan 1. 2. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer.
3. Perform the following steps to remove the system fan: a) Disconnect the system-fan cable [1] and power cable [2] from the system board. b) Un-route the power cable from its holder to access the system fan screw [3]. c) Remove the screws that secure the system fan to the computer. Lift the system fan away from the computer.
Installing the System Fan 1. Perform the following steps to install the system fan: a) b) c) d) 2. Place the system fan in its slot in the computer. Connect the system-fan cable and power cable to the system board. Tighten the screws to secure the system fan to the computer. Route the power cable to its holder in the computer. Install the: a) battery b) base cover 3. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the Heatsink 1.
4. Loosen the captive screws that secure the heatsink to the computer and remove the heatsink from the computer. Installing the Heatsink 1. Place the heatsink on the computer. 2. Tighten the captive screws to secure the heatsink to the system board. 3. Route the WLAN antenna cables along their channels on the system board. 4. Install the: a) system fan b) base cover c) battery 5. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the Display Assembly 1.
3. Perform the following steps: a) Disconnect the antenna cables from WLAN card. Un-route the antenna cables from the WLAN card . b) Remove the screw that secures the bracket over the display cable and remove the bracket . c) Disconnect the display cable from the system board. 4. Perform the following steps: a) Disconnect the touch panel, network connector, and display cables: b) Remove the screws that secure the display hinges to the palmrest assembly.
5. Slide the palmrest assembly away to release the display assembly. Installing the Display Assembly 1. Align the palmrest assembly on the display assembly. 2. Tighten the screws to secure the display hinges to the palmrest assembly. 3. Connect the following cables: a) touch panel b) network connector c) display 4. Align the bracket over the display cable and tighten the screw to secure the bracket to the computer. 5.
Removing the System Board 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working on Your Computer. 2. Remove the: a) b) c) d) e) f) g) h) i) j) k) l) m) 3.
4. Remove the screws that secure the system board to the chassis. 5. Lift and remove the system board from the chassis. Installing the System Board 1. Replace the system board on the chassis. 2. Tighten the screws to secure the system board to the chassis.

System Setup 3 System Setup enables you to manage your computer hardware and specify BIOS‐level options.

Option Description Date/Time Allows you to set the date and time. Table 3. System Configuration Option Description Integrated NIC Allows you to configure the integrated network controller. The options are: • • • SATA Operation Disabled Enabled Enabled w/PXE (Default Setting) Allows you to configure the internal SATA hard-drive controller. The options are: • • Disabled AHCI (Default Setting) NOTE: SATA is configured to support AHCI mode. Drives Allows you to configure the SATA drives on board.
Option Description Audio Allows you to enable or disable the integrated audio controller. • Unobtrusive Mode Enable Audio (Default Setting) When enabled, pressing Fn + B will turn off all light and sound emissions in the system. Press Fn + B to resume normal operation. • Enable Unobtrusive Mode By default it is disabled. Miscellaneous Devices Allows you enable or disable the various on board devices.
Option Description Default Setting: Enable Strong Password is not selected. Password Configuration You can define the length of your password. Min = 4 , Max = 32 Password Bypass Allows you to enable or disable the permission to bypass the System and the Internal HDD password, when they are set. The options are: • • Disabled (Default Setting) Reboot bypass Password Change Allows you to enable the disable permission to the System and Hard Drive passwords when the admin password is set.
Option Description Mode option is disabled by default. The options are: • • • • PK KEK db dbx If you enable the Custom Mode, the relevant options for PK, KEK, db, and dbx appear.
Option Description Intel TurboBoost This option allows you to enable or disable the Intel TurboBoost mode of the processor. Default Setting: Enable Intel TurboBoost Hyper-Thread Control Allows you to enable or disable the HyperThreading in the processor.
Option Description • • • • • Block Sleep Disabled - Does not allow the system to power on by special LAN signals when it receives a wake-up signal from the LAN or wireless LAN. (Default Setting) LAN Only - Allows the system to be powered on by special LAN signals. WLAN Only LAN or WLAN LAN with PXE Boot Allows you to block the computer from entering into the sleep state. Option is disabled by default. • Block Sleep (S3) Peak Shift Peak Shift minimizes AC power usage at times of peak demand.
Option Description Fn Key Emulation Allows you to match the key feature of PS-2 keyboard with the key feature in an internal keyboard. The option is enabled by default. • Fn Lock Options Enable Fn Key Emulation This option when enabled allows the hot key combination + toggle the primary behaviour of F1–F12 between their standard and secondary functions. • Fn Lock Hot Key Default – Standard Default – Secondary Fastboot Allows you to speed up the boot processes.
Option Description NOTE: For Windows 8.1 Operating System, the Wireless Switch option is directly controlled by the OS driver. So, this setting here does not affect the Wireless Switch Behavior. Wireless Device Enable Allows you to enable or disable the internal wireless devices. The options are: • • • WWAN Bluetooth WLAN All options are enabled by default. Lid-Mounted Wireless Activity LED This field allows you to control the wireless activity LED mounted on the lid of the system.
3. Enter the Service Tag or Express Service Code and click Submit. NOTE: To locate the Service Tag, click Where is my Service Tag? NOTE: If you cannot find your Service Tag, click Detect My Product. Proceed with the instructions on screen. 4. If you are unable to locate or find the Service Tag, click the Product Category of your computer. 5. Choose the Product Type from the list. 6. Select your computer model and the Product Support page of your computer appears. 7.
To enter a system setup, press immediately after a power-on or re-boot. 1. In the System BIOS or System Setup screen, select System Security and press . The System Security screen appears. 2. In the System Security screen, verify that Password Status is Unlocked. 3. Select System Password , enter your system password, and press or . Use the following guidelines to assign the system password: – A password can have up to 32 characters.
Diagnostics 4 If you experience a problem with your computer, run the ePSA diagnostics before contacting Dell for technical assistance. The purpose of running diagnostics is to test your computer's hardware without requiring additional equipment or risking data loss. If you are unable to fix the problem yourself, service and support personnel can use the diagnostics results to help you solve the problem.
Device Status Lights Icon Description Turns on when you turn on the computer and blinks when the computer is in a power management mode. Turns on when the computer reads or writes data. Turns on steadily or blinks to indicate battery charge status. Turns on when wireless networking is enabled.
