Read this first – important safety and handling information Before using your ThinkPad® 10 (referred to as the tablet in this document), read all the information in this section. Reading the safety and handling information first helps you avoid the risk of personal injury, property loss, or accidental damage to your tablet. For additional tips to help you operate the tablet safely, go to: http://www.lenovo.com/safety This information can help you safely use your tablet.
• Power cords, plugs, power adapters, extension cords, surge protectors, or power supplies that are cracked, broken, or damaged. • Signs of overheating, smoke, sparks, or fire. • Damage to a battery (such as cracks, dents, or creases), discharge from a battery, or a buildup of foreign substances on the battery. • A cracking, hissing, or popping sound, or strong odor that comes from the product.
Excessive use of headphones or earphones for a long period of time at high volume can be dangerous if the output of the headphone or earphone connectors do not comply with specifications of EN 50332-2. The headphone output connector of your tablet complies with EN 50332-2 Sub clause 7. This specification limits the tablet's maximum wide band true RMS output voltage to 150 mV.
CAUTION: Hazardous moving parts. Keep fingers and other body parts away. Power cords and power adapters DANGER Use only the power cords and power adapters supplied by the product manufacturer. The power cords shall be safety approved. For Germany, it shall be H05VV-F, 3G, 0.75 mm2, or better. For other countries, the suitable types shall be used accordingly. Never wrap a power cord around a power adapter or other object. Doing so can stress the cord in ways that can cause the cord to fray, crack, or crimp.
Plugs and outlets DANGER If a receptacle (power outlet) that you intend to use with your tablet equipment appears to be damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualified electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
Electrical current safety information DANGER Electric current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. To avoid a shock hazard: • Do not use your tablet during a lightning storm. • Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm. • Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet. • Connect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to this product.
General battery notice DANGER Batteries supplied by Lenovo for use with your product have been tested for compatibility and should only be replaced with approved parts. A battery other than the one specified by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modified battery is not covered by the warranty. Battery abuse or mishandling can cause overheat, liquid leakage, or an explosion. To avoid possible injury, do the following: • Do not open, dissemble, or service any battery. • Do not crush or puncture the battery.
California Perchlorate Information: Products containing manganese dioxide lithium coin-cell batteries may contain perchlorate. Perchlorate Material - special handling may apply, See www.dtsc.ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlorate Use supported charging methods only: To recharge the internal battery of your tablet safely, see “Charging the tablet” on page 10. Attention: Use only Lenovo-approved ac power adapters and power cords. Unauthorized ac power adapters and power cords could severely damage the tablet.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) cable and cord notice Many tablet products and accessories contain cords, cables or wires, such as power cords or cords to connect the accessory to a tablet. If this product has such a cord, cable or wire, then the following warning applies: WARNING: Handling the cord on this product or cords associated with accessories sold with this product will expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

Chapter 1. Meeting ThinkPad 10 Get an overview of the tablet, such as the connectors, indicators, features, specifications, and operating environment. In the box Your shipping box contains the following items. Depending on the model, your tablet might come with one or more of the accessories. If your tablet does not come with some of the accessories, you can purchase them from a Lenovo reseller or from the Lenovo Web site at: http://www.lenovo.

Chapter 2. Getting Started Learn the basics to get started with your ThinkPad tablet. Follow the instructions to set up your tablet, use the multi-touch screen, connect to a network, and put your tablet into proper power modes. Setting up your tablet When you use the tablet for the first time, do the following to complete the initial setup: 1 Connect your tablet to ac power (steps a to c as shown). 2 Press the power button to turn on the tablet.
Zoom in Zoom out Put two fingers on the screen and move them farther apart to zoom in. Put two fingers on the screen and move them closer together to zoom out. Rotate Swipe in from the right edge Put two or more fingers on an item, and then rotate your fingers clockwise or counterclockwise. Display the charms that contain system commands, such as Start, Settings, Search, Share, and Devices.
Using a wireless network Connect your tablet to the Internet or other local area networks so that you can browse on your tablet and share information. Your tablet might support the following wireless networks: • Wi-Fi network The Wi-Fi feature provides network access at distances of up to 100 meters (328 feet) depending on the Wi-Fi router and your surroundings.
To replace or install a micro SIM card: 1 Turn off the tablet. Insert a straightened paper clip into the hole of the micro-SIM-card tray. The micro-SIM-card tray ejects. 2 Gently pull out the micro-SIM-card tray. If a micro-SIM card is installed in the tray, take out the micro SIM card. If no micro SIM card is installed in the tray, skip this step. 3 Install a new micro SIM card into the tray. Ensure that the new micro SIM card is installed in correct orientation. Insert the tray into the tablet.
Power button and power modes If you are not going to use the tablet for a period of time, put the tablet into sleep mode or turn off the tablet to save power. Putting the tablet into sleep mode If you are not going to use the tablet for a few minutes, put your tablet into sleep mode to lock it and save power. To achieve this, do the following: 1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen to display the charms. 2. Open the Settings charm then tap Power ➙ Sleep. • Press the power button on your tablet.

Chapter 3. Using your tablet Learn the skills to make the best use of your tablet such as using Lenovo apps, connecting a near-field-communication (NFC) device, and using the fingerprint reader.
Lenovo Solution Center This app enables you to troubleshoot and resolve tablet problems. It combines diagnostic tests, system information collection, security status, and support information, along with hints and tips. REACHit REACHit enables you to manage all your files, no matter where they are stored, inside one single app. Connect your devices along with multiple cloud storage accounts for a simpler and faster way to access your stuff.
NFC-enabled device over a distance no more than a few centimeters. Some Lenovo apps are using the NFC feature. Depending on the model, your tablet might come with the NFC feature. To pair your tablet with an NFC card: 1 Align the card with the extension line of the camera center as shown. Ensure that the card is in NFC Data Exchange Format (NDEF), otherwise the card cannot be detected. Attention: Before handling the NFC card, touch a metal table or a grounded metal object.
To install a micro SD card: Hold the card with the metal contacts facing down and pointing toward the tablet. Insert the card into the micro-SD-card reader until you hear a click. Attention: Before handling the micro-SD card, touch a metal table or a grounded metal object. Otherwise the card might get damaged by the static electricity from your body. To remove the micro SD card: 1 Push the micro SD card inward a little until you hear a click. The micro SD card ejects.
To install a smart card: Hold the card with the metal contacts a facing downward and pointing toward the smart card reader. Insert the card into the smart card reader as shown. Attention: • Before handling the smart card, touch a metal table or a grounded metal object. Otherwise the card might get damaged by the static electricity from your body. • During the data transfer, do not put your tablet into sleep or hibernation mode; otherwise, your data could get damaged. To enable the plug-and-play feature: 1.
4. Enter the Windows password as required. Then follow the instructions on the screen to enroll your fingerprint. Note: It is recommended that you enroll more than one fingerprint in case of any injuries to your fingers. When you swipe your finger over the fingerprint reader, note the following: 1 Place the top joint of your finger on the sensor. 2 Apply light pressure and swipe your finger across the reader in one smooth motion. Do not lift your finger when you are swiping it.
The system administrator can set the same supervisor password on many tablets to make administration easier. It is recommended that you record your password and store it in a safe place. If you forget your supervisor password, Lenovo cannot reset your password. You must take your tablet to a Lenovo reseller or a Lenovo marketing representative to have the system board replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and a fee will be charged for parts and service.
2. Tap Settings ➙ Change PC settings ➙ Network. 3. Slide the control to the right to turn on Airplane mode. In the Airplane mode, all wireless features are disabled. • Be careful about the seat in front of you on the airplane. Place your tablet in a safe position so that it does not get caught when the person in front of you leans back. Tips on carrying tablet accessories Consider to take the following accessories when you are planning to travel.
Chapter 4. Accessories The following accessories are designed to enhance your experience with the tablet: • “ThinkPad Active Pen and USB pen holder” on page 21 • “ThinkPad 10 Ultrabook Keyboard” on page 22 • “ThinkPad 10 Quickshot Cover” on page 24 Depending on the model, your tablet might not come with certain accessories. You can purchase the accessories from the Lenovo Web site at: http://www.lenovo.
Installing a battery to power the active pen 1 Unscrew the end cap. 2 Insert an AAAA alkaline battery into the battery compartment. 3 Tighten the end cap. Note: Your tablet might be shipped with an AAAA alkaline battery. Using the USB pen holder to store the active pen Note: The USB pen holder is available only on some tablet models.
Keyboard overview 1 Pen slot If your tablet comes with an active pen, you can store it in the pen slot of the keyboard. Note: Some keyboard models also come with a pen slot cover to protect the pen slot from dust. 2 Clickpad The clickpad is a pointer-positioning device that enables you to point, select, and scroll, like you do with a traditional mouse. You also can use the clickpad to perform basic touch gestures.
• Attach for carrying Attach the keyboard to your tablet as shown so that you can easily carry them around together. Note: This method only applies to tablet models that are not equipped with a smart card reader. ThinkPad 10 Quickshot Cover The ThinkPad 10 Quickshot Cover (referred to as the cover in this section) is designed for ThinkPad 10 tablets that are not equipped with a smart card reader. The cover is a handy option with multiple functions.
Launching the camera The cover enables you to launch the rear camera in a quick way. Open the cover to an angle of 360 degrees. In this situation, you can launch the rear camera by just flipping over the magnetic tab of the cover as shown. Using the cover as a stand Fold the cover as shown so that it serves as a tablet stand. Chapter 5. Advanced configuration This chapter provides information about the advanced configuration and features. Installing device drivers The device drivers are available at http://www.lenovo.com/ThinkPadDrivers. Choose your tablet product name to view all the device drivers for your tablet. Attention: Always go to http://www.lenovo.com/ThinkPadDrivers for the latest device drivers. Do not download them from the Windows Update Web site.
On each menu, tap the default value to show selectable options and tap a desired option to select it. Follow the instructions on the screen to configure the settings. After you change the settings, tap Restart, and then tap your desired option to restart the tablet. Note: Some items are displayed on the menu only if the tablet supports the corresponding features.
Chapter 6. Accessibility Lenovo helps users with disabilities to access information and technology easily. Some accessibility tools are available in the Windows operating system, and others can be purchased from third-party providers. This section gives a brief introduction to the available accessibility tools. For details about how to use the accessibility tools, see the Windows Help and Support information system.
Customizable text size Depending on your preference, you can change only the text size instead of changing the size of everything on the desktop. To change the text size, open Control Panel, tap Appearances and Personalization ➙ Display, go to Change only the text size, and set a text size that meets your needs. Magnifier Your tablet is equipped with the Microsoft Magnifier to help visually impaired people use the tablet more comfortably.
Chapter 7. Troubleshooting If your tablet encounters a problem, find a solution here. Frequently asked questions The problems and solutions described in this section are meant only as a guide. They are not definitive problem-solving techniques. If a problem persists, you can get support from Lenovo. For more information, see “Calling Lenovo” on page 36. Attention: When you observe a problem, stop operation immediately, because taking further action might result in data loss or damage.
Audio problem Poor audio quality or no sound output? Ensure that: • The speaker is not covered. • The speaker mute function is disabled. • If you are using a headset, unplug it, then plug it in again. • The volume is not turned to the lowest level. Failed to play a song, video, or other media file? Ensure that the media file is not corrupted. External device connection problem Failed to detect an external display? Tap and hold (right-click) anywhere on the desktop, then tap Screen ➙ Resolution ➙ Detect.
• Message: 0183: Bad CRC of Security Settings in EFI Variable. Enter ThinkPad Tablet Setup. Solution: Checksum of the Security settings in the EFI Variable is not correct. Enter ThinkPad Tablet Setup to check security settings, and restart the system. If you still encounter a problem, have the tablet serviced. • Message: 0187: EAIA data access error. Solution: The access to EEPROM is failed. Have the tablet serviced. • Message: 0188: Invalid RFID Serialization Information Area.
To refresh your tablet, do the following: 1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen to display the charms. 2. Tap Settings ➙ Change PC settings. 3. In the navigation panel, tap Update and recovery ➙ Recovery. 4. In the Refresh your PC without affecting your files section, tap Get started. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen to refresh your tablet.
After two consecutive failed boot attempts, the Windows recovery programs start automatically. Then you can choose repair and recovery options by following the instructions on the screen. Note: Ensure that your tablet is connected to ac power during the recovery process. Creating and using a recovery USB drive You can create a recovery USB drive as a backup for the Windows recovery programs.
3. Tap Startup. In the Boot submenu, drag the recovery drive to the first place to select it as the boot device. 4. Save configuration changes and restart the tablet. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen to recover the tablet. For more information about the recovery solutions provided by the Windows 8.1 operating system, go to: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=263800 Lenovo Factory Recovery USB Key To obtain a Lenovo Factory Recovery USB Key, contact Lenovo Customer Support Center.
• Registering your tablet Register your tablet with Lenovo so that you can get prompt support. For more information, see “Registering your tablet” on page 13. • Installing system updates Installing the latest drivers or software might resolve the problems. To download the latest drivers or software, go to: http://www.lenovo.
