Basic Printing Basic Printing Note This Quick Start Guide describes some of the features of your i860 printer and how to use them. For more information, view the i860 User's Guide on the Setup Software & User's Guide CD-ROM, or use the online help within your printer driver interface: While in the printer's Properties window, press the F1 key, or click ? in the upper right corner. Then click the feature you want to know more about, or click the Help button when displayed.
Basic Printing Important z Before unplugging the power cord, turn off the printer and ensure that the green lamp has gone out. z If the POWER lamp changes to orange and begins flashing, refer to the section "Handling Handling Error Messages" Messages on page 72. Loading Paper Print Media to Avoid Do not use the following types of paper. Using such paper will not only produce unsatisfactory results, but can also cause the printer to jam or malfunction.
Basic Printing 2 Prepare to load paper. (1) Open the paper rest and then the paper rest flap to support the paper. 1 3 3 2 (2) Open the cover and pull out the paper output tray completely (in the order of 1 , 2 and 3 ). Load the paper. (1) Insert the paper into the auto sheet feeder with the print side facing up. (2) Align the paper stack against the right side of the auto sheet feeder. Load Limit Mark Do not load beyond this Load Limit Mark.
Basic Printing Using Specialty Media Canon recommends that you use genuine Canon media to ensure optimal print quality.

Basic Printing Printing with Windows Note 1 2 z The menu screens and dialog boxes that appear may vary, depending on the software application you are using. z The steps described in this section are for printing in Windows XP. Create a document or open a file to print. Open the Printer Properties dialog box. (1) Select Print from the application software's File menu. (2) Ensure that Canon i860 is selected. (3) Click Preferences or Properties.
Basic Printing 3 Specify the required settings. (1) Click Media Type to select the type of media loaded in the printer. (2) Click OK. OK Note z From the Page Setup tab, select the correct document size to be printed. z To adjust Print Quality settings, select Custom and click Set on the Main tab. You can control the print quality in the Set Print Quality dialog box. z For details about other printer driver functions, refer to the User’s Guide or Help.
Basic Printing 4 Print the document. (1) Click Print or OK. OK Note You can cancel a print job in progress by simply pressing the RESUME/ CANCEL button on the printer. Create a document or open a file to print.
Basic Printing 2 Select Paper Size Size. (1) Select Page Setup... from the application software's File menu. (2) Select i860 from Format for. for (3) Select the desired paper size from the Paper Size pull-down menu. (4) Click OK. OK 3 Specify the required settings. (1) Select Print... from the application software's File menu. (2) Select Quality & Media from the pull-down menu. (3) Select the desired media type from the Media Type pulldown menu.
Basic Printing (4) Select Color Options from the pull-down menu. (5) Select the type of the document from the Print Type pull-down menu. (6) Click Print. Print Note 12 z For details about other printer driver functions, refer to the User’s Guide or Help. Help z Double-clicking the printer name in the Printer list displays a dialog that prompts you to confirm the status of the print job(s). To cancel a job in progress, select the desired document, then click Delete.
Advanced Printing Advanced Printing Printing Photographs Directly from a Digital Camera Connecting a digital camera or digital video camcorder to the printer allows you to print captured images directly without using a computer. Use the USB cable that came with your digital camera to connect to the printer. Note z To print directly from a digital camera or digital video camcorder, use only "PictBridge" or Canon "Bubble Jet Direct" compatible digital cameras or digital video camcorders.
Advanced Printing Media Types for Digital Camera You can use the following Canon media: Digital Camera Setting Media Type Card #1 Photo Paper Pro 4” x 6” / 101.6 x 152.4 mm Card #2 Photo Paper Plus Glossy 4” x 6” / 101.6 x 152.4 mm Card #3 Photo Paper Plus Glossy 5” x 7” / 127 x 177.8 mm LTR Photo Paper Pro or Photo Paper Plus Glossy Letter A4 Photo Paper Pro or Photo Paper Plus Glossy A4 Printing from a Digital Camera 1 2 Ensure that the printer is turned on. Load the paper.
Advanced Printing (2) Connect the digital camera and printer with the USB cable that came with the digital camera. The digital camera will automatically turn on. If not, turn it on manually. 4 Start printing using the print function of the digital camera. (1) Display the image you want to print in the Replay mode. If the camera will not change to the Replay mode, refer to your digital camera user's manual instructions for changing the camera to the Replay mode.
Advanced Printing Note z For the digital camera operation and troubleshooting, refer to your digital camera user's manual. For print error messages, refer to "Cannot Cannot Print Properly from the Digital Camera" Camera on page 76. z For the digital video camcorder operation, print error messages, and troubleshooting, refer to your digital video camcorder user's manual.
Advanced Printing Printing from the Photo Paper Tray The Photo Paper Tray allows you to print on specialty paper like Photo Paper Pro. When attached, it prints on the photo paper while another type of paper is loaded through the Auto Sheet Feeder of the printer. You can simply select which to use, without having to change the paper to be fed.
Advanced Printing 2 Install the Photo Paper Tray. Put the Photo Paper Tray along the paper rest and insert it until it clicks into place. Put the protrusions of the Photo Paper Tray all the way into the slots of the printer. 3 Load the paper. (1) Open the cover on the Photo Paper Tray. (2) Load the paper with its printing side facing up. (3) Set the edge of the paper to the right end of the Photo Paper Tray. Up to 20 sheets of paper can be loaded at once.
Advanced Printing Paper guide (5) Close the cover on the Photo Paper Tray. 4 Select to feed paper from the Photo Paper Tray. Turn the knob to the left until it points at the arrow on the Photo Paper Tray. The tray is slided into the Auto Sheet Feeder, and the printer is now ready for feeding paper from the Photo Paper Tray.
Advanced Printing Important z Turning the knob switches the source from where the paper is fed. Turning it to the left end feeds paper from the Photo Paper Tray, while turning it to the right end feeds paper from the Auto Sheet Feeder. z Do not leave paper in the Photo Paper Tray for a long time. This may cause paper discoloration due to natural aging. Removing the Photo Paper Tray 1 Turn the knob to the right until it points at the Tray to lift up the Photo Paper Tray.
Advanced Printing Printing on Photo Paper Using the Photo Paper Tray Up to 20 sheets of photo paper can be loaded through the Photo Paper Tray. Note 1 2 3 4 Media Types Loadable from the Photo Paper Tray z The media types loadable from the Photo Paper Tray are: Photo Paper Pro PR-101, Photo Paper Plus Glossy PP-101, and Glossy Photo Paper GP-401. z Up to 20 sheets of paper can be loaded in the Photo Paper Tray.
Advanced Printing (4) Click OK. OK The Print dialog box opens. Note 5 The size of media that is loadable in the Photo Paper Tray is 4" x 6". Click the Page Setup tab to select the same size of paper loaded in the Photo Paper Tray. Start printing. (1) Click Print or OK. OK 6 Pull up the tray when printing is complete. To pull up the tray, turn the knob on the tray to the right until it clicks. With this setting, the paper will be fed from the Auto Sheet Feeder automatically.

Advanced Printing (4) Ensure that the auto sheet feeder is selected in Paper Source. Source (5) Select Print Mode. Mode (6) Click Print. Print Printing will now begin. 5 6 Start printing. Pull up the tray when printing is complete. To pull up the tray, turn the knob to the right until it points at the arrow to lift the Photo Paper Tray. With this setting, the paper will be fed from the Auto Sheet Feeder automatically.
Advanced Printing Accessing the Printer Driver The Printer Properties dialog box can be opened from either within an application, or directly from the Windows Start menu. Note z This manual refers to Windows XP operation. The operations may vary depending on your operating system. z Depending on your application program, the command and menu names may differ, and there may be more steps involved in opening the Printer Properties dialog box. For more details, see the user's manual for your application.
Advanced Printing Adjusting the Print Quality for Photographs Improving the Quality of Printed Images Two important factors control the quality and output of your printed images: Paper and Ink Using recommended Canon paper, specialty media, and inks for printing photographs can significantly improve the quality of your printouts. See the inside back cover for a list of Canon Specialty Papers and ink tanks for this printer.
Advanced Printing To manually adjust Print Quality settings: 1 Open the Printer Properties dialog box. See"Opening Opening the Printer Properties Dialog Box from Your Application Program" Program on page 25. 2 Select Custom in Print Quality Quality, then click Set... to open the Set Print Quality dialog box. 3 Move the slide bar to adjust the print quality. 4 When the process is complete, click OK. OK 1 Open the Print dialog box. See "Printing Printing with Macintosh" Macintosh on page 10.
Advanced Printing 4 When the process is complete, click Print. Print To automatically optimize the image: Photo Optimizer PRO automatically adjusts the photographs taken with a digital camera. Use this feature to compensate for unsatisfactory color balance and over- or underexposure before printing. 1 Open the Printer Properties dialog box. See"Opening Opening the Printer Properties Dialog Box from Your Application Program" Program on page 25. 2 3 28 Click the Effects tab.
Advanced Printing 4 Click OK. OK To use Vivid Photo option: Vivid Photo intensifies background colors like fields, trees, oceans and skies, while maintaining natural skin tones in the images. Note In Windows Me, Windows 98 or Windows 95 If Background Printing has been disabled, the Vivid Photo function is not available. To use Vivid Photo, select the Vivid Photo check box on the Effects tab. To use Vivid Photo, select the Vivid Photo check box under Special Effects.
Advanced Printing The Photo Noise Reduction function reduces noise from blue portions, such as the sky and dark portions of the images taken with your digital camera. Note In Windows Me, Windows 98 or Windows 95 If Background Printing has been disabled, the Photo Noise Reduction function is not available. To use Photo Noise Reduction, select the Photo Noise Reduction check box on the Effects tab.
Advanced Printing To use Photo Noise Reduction, select the Photo Noise Reduction check box under Special Effects.
Advanced Printing Saving and Recalling Driver Settings When you change printer driver settings for a specific print job, such as printing black and white photos, or printing documents with a special background, you can save and name these settings for future use on similar print jobs. 1 Open the Printer Properties dialog box. See "Opening Opening the Printer Properties Dialog Box from Your Application Program" Program on page 25. 2 3 Click the Profiles tab. Enter the new settings in Profiles.
Advanced Printing This registers your printer driver print settings. Note You can retrieve or delete the print settings profile at any time. Retrieving profile: Select the desired profile from Printing Profiles, and click Retrieve from Profiles. Profiles Deleting unwanted profile: Select the desired profile from Printing Profiles, and click Delete. Delete For details, click Help and refer to the topic of this function. 1 Open the Print dialog box.
Advanced Printing This registers your printer driver settings. Note You can retrieve or change the saved driver settings at any time. z Retrieving print settings: Select the name of the print settings to retrieve from the Presets in the Print dialog. z Changing drivers settings: When registered print settings are selected, you can delete them or change their name. Select the name of the settings to delete from the Settings list and click Remove.
Advanced Printing Using the Printer Driver Options Your printer driver will provide you with many features that allow you to print a wide range of images and documents. The illustrations below provide a basic introduction to many of these. Advanced Printing Using the Bundled Software The Setup Software & User’s Guide CD-ROM includes photo applications designed to edit the photographs taken by a digital camera and print them as photo-lab quality prints without standard white borders. Please use the application(s) suitable for your print purposes. Note z To install applications, refer to Easy Setup Instructions.
Advanced Printing ***: Exif Print (Exif 2.2) is the worldwide standard. Under Exif 2.2, the digital camera can record data tags for specific camera settings and functions such as whether the flash was on or off, if the camera was in portrait or night scene mode, etc. Canon BJ Printers support Exif Print and use a suitable photo application to read the camera data precisely, producing optimal prints. This enables you to create prints that reproduce your vision more accurately than ever before.
Advanced Printing Printing Borderless Photographs with Windows This chapter describes the steps used to print from photo applications included with your Setup Software & User’s Guide CD-ROM using the Borderless Printing mode. Note z Media Types Suitable for Borderless Printing Media types compatible with Borderless Printing include Photo Paper Plus Glossy (LTR, 4” x 6” , 5” x 7” ), Photo Paper Pro (LTR, 4” x 6” ), Matte Photo Paper (LTR), and Glossy Photo Paper (LTR).

Printing Maintenance Printing Maintenance Replacing an Ink Tank When replacing an ink tank, check the model number very carefully. The printer will not print properly if the wrong ink tank is used, or installed in the incorrect position. With this printer, ink tanks must be installed in the order from left to right indicated below.
Printing Maintenance Note Should missing characters or white streaks appear despite sufficient ink levels, refer to the section "When When Printing Becomes Faint or Colors are Incorrect Incorrect" on page 50. The following message appears when ink is empty. Printing will resume as soon as ink tank is replaced and the front cover is closed. The ink tank with [X] symbol is out of ink. Replace with a new ink tank. • Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to resume printing with an empty ink tank.
Printing Maintenance The following message is displayed when ink tank is empty. Printing will resume as soon as ink tank is replaced and the front cover is closed. • Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to resume printing with the ink tank empty. When printing is finished, replace the ink tank immediately. If you continue printing with an empty ink tank, it may cause problems. Note When Low Ink is Detected The following message is displayed as soon as a print job starts. [!] indicates a low ink level.
Printing Maintenance Do not touch the lock lever; remove only the ink tank. Important 3 z Handle ink tanks carefully to avoid staining clothing or the surrounding area. z Discard empty ink tanks according to the local laws and regulations regarding disposal of consumables. Prepare a replacement tank. (1) Unpack the new ink tank and pull off the orange tape. (2) Remove the orange protective cap from the bottom of the ink tank and discard it.
Printing Maintenance 4 Insert the ink tank. (1) Insert the ink tank into the print head holder. (2) Press on the "PUSH" mark until the ink tank snaps firmly into place. 5 Close the front cover. The print head holder moves to the right. The ink tank installation process is now complete. Note z To maintain optimal print quality, use an ink tank within six months of its first use. z Once an ink tank has been used, do not remove it from the printer and leave it out in the open.
Printing Maintenance When Printing Becomes Faint or Colors are Incorrect When printing becomes faint or colors are incorrect, even if ink remains in the ink tanks, the print head nozzles are probably clogged. Follow the procedures below to maintain the print head. Important Before maintaining the print head, check the following; z Open the front cover and make sure that the ink tank contains ink. If it is out of ink, replace it. z Ensure that all the orange tape of the ink tank has been peeled off.
Printing Maintenance Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern Print the nozzle check pattern to determine whether the ink ejects properly from the print head nozzles, and to verify print head alignment. Use this function when printed results are blurred or the color is incorrect. Note 1 2 Nozzle check pattern printing can be executed also from the printer itself. With the printer on, load a sheet of Letter-sized paper in the printer. Hold the RESUME/CANCEL button until the POWER lamp flashes twice.

(1) Double-click the hard disk icon where the printer driver was installed, the Applications folder, and then the Utilities folder. (2) Double-click the Print Center icon. (3) Select i860 from the Name list and click Configure. Configure 3 (4) Select i860 from the Product list and click Select. Select Print the Nozzle Check Pattern.

Printing Maintenance Print Head Cleaning Clean the print head if you suspect that the nozzles might be clogged. Cleaning the print head consumes ink, so perform print head cleaning only when necessary. The print head can be cleaned also from the printer itself. With the printer on, load a sheet of Letter-sized paper in the printer. Hold the RESUME/CANCEL button until the POWER lamp flashes once. 1 2 Ensure that the printer is on. Open the Printer Properties dialog box.

(1) Double-click the hard disk icon where the printer driver was installed, the Applications folder, and then the Utilities folder. (2) Double-click the Print Center icon. (3) Select i860 from the Name list and click Configure. Configure (4) Select i860 from the Product list and click Select. Select 3 Start Print Head Cleaning. (1) Select Cleaning from the pull-down menu. (2) Click Cleaning.
Printing Maintenance Important Note Do not perform any other operations until the print head cleaning finishes. This takes about 50 seconds. z Print head cleaning can be performed also from the printer itself. Ensure that the printer is on. Hold down the RESUME/CANCEL button until the POWER lamp flashes once. If this does not resolve the problem, clean the print heads again, up to three more times.
Printing Maintenance Print Head Deep Cleaning If print quality does not improve by standard print head cleaning, try performing print head deep cleaning, which is a more powerful process. Print head deep cleaning consumes ink, so perform this procedure only when necessary. 1 2 Ensure that the printer is on. Open the Printer Properties dialog box. See "Opening Opening the Printer Properties Dialog Box Directly from the Start Menu" Menu on page 25. 3 Start Print Head Deep Cleaning.
Printing Maintenance (5) When the confirmation message is displayed, click OK. OK Print head deep cleaning starts when the POWER lamp starts blinking. Do not perform any other operation until the print head deep cleaning is completed. This takes about one minute. 1 2 Ensure that the printer is on. Open the Printer Utility dialog box. (1) Double-click the hard disk icon where the printer driver was installed, the Applications folder, and then the Utilities folder. (2) Double-click the Print Center icon.
Printing Maintenance (5) When the confirmation message is displayed, click OK. OK Print head deep cleaning starts when the POWER lamp starts blinking. Do not perform any other operation until the print head deep cleaning is completed. This takes about one minute. Important Note The process takes one or two minutes to complete, so simply wait until the POWER lamp stops flashing. After print head deep cleaning finishes, print the nozzle check pattern to verify that the print head nozzles are clean.
Printing Maintenance Aligning the Print Head This operation must be carried out when using the printer for the first time. Aligning the print head positions allows you to print without shifts in the color registration. Print head alignment is performed either automatically or manually. This section deals with automatic print head alignment only. 1 2 With the printer on, load a sheet of Letter-sized paper in the printer. Open the Printer Properties dialog box.
Printing Maintenance (4) After the pattern is printed, click Yes. Yes The print head is aligned automatically. The printer is now ready to use. Note 62 z If the pattern is not printed successfully, open the front cover and ensure that the ink tanks are correctly installed. z If the pattern above is not displayed, see "Troubleshooting." z You can align the print head manually while checking the printed pattern. Open the Printer Properties dialog box. Click the Maintenance tab and then Custom Settings.

Printing Maintenance It takes about one minute to start printing. The pattern is printed, and the print head is aligned automatically. The printer is now ready to use. Note 64 z If the pattern is not printed successfully, open the front cover and ensure that the ink tanks are correctly installed. z If the pattern above is not displayed, see "Troubleshooting". z You can align the print head manually while checking the printed pattern. Open the BJ Printer Utility dialog box.
Troubleshooting Troubleshooting This section provides troubleshooting tips for the most common printing problems. Troubleshooting Cannot Install the Printer Driver Problem Possible Cause Cannot Install the Installation Printer Driver procedure not followed correctly Try This Follow the Easy Setup Instructions packaged with your printer for proper printer driver installation. If the installer was forced to be terminated due to an error, Windows may be unstable. Remove the CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive and restart your computer. Reinstall the printer driver.
