Sun Exposure/Watering
SUN: Best flowering in full sun. Too much shade and flowers & plant body will be very lite.
SOIL: moist, well-drained soil. Not too wet, roots will rot
Mature Plant Size: very large, up to 9’ tall and wide, habit is open and airy
Bloom Period: early Spring
Growing Tips:
Forsythia will benefit from a trim/ shape up right after blooming or a very hard “thin out” every 3 or 4
years to clean out the old stems. The timing of the trimming is very important as if it is done too late,
the next year’s buds are sacrificed, and bloom set will be diminished. Can tolerate clay-type soils to a
certain degree. Mulch root area if in a location that winters get very cold.
Uses
Mass plantings, woodland settings, borders, slopes (erosion control), if in England: a cottage garden
staple, in areas of heavy deer pressure, cut branch forcing
