Chapter 2 - Installation Installation System Requirements Chapter 2 Installation Before using the WLAN Adapter, ensure that your system meets the following minimum requirements: • Windows XP/2000/2003/Vista/7, Linux (for Linux Kernel 2.4, 2.6.29) • 128MB system memory or larger • 750MHz processor or higher • The ASUS WLAN utility cannot run on Windows® 7 and Linux. • Install the utilities and driver before using the WLAN Adapter.

From the Other devices category, right-click 802.11 n WLAN then select Update Driver Software. 5. Select Browse my computer for driver software.

You may also click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, then select ASUS 802.11 n Network Adapter and click Next to start the driver installation. 7. Chapter 2 - Installation Using the WPS Wizard WPS Wizard is a utility that allows you to easily set up your wireless network using the following: • PIN code of the WPS router or AP that you want to connect to. Launching the WPS Wizard Chapter 2 Installation To launch the WPS Wizard: 1. From the Windows® taskbar, right-click the WLAN icon , then select WPS. 2. The WPS Wizard appears. Select the method that you want to use to connect to the network.
Chapter 2 - Installation Connecting via the WPS button Chapter 2 Installation 1. From the WPS Wizard, select Use the WPS button. Click Next. 2. Press the WPS button on the router.
Chapter 2 - Installation 3. The 802.11n network adapter searches for the wireless router. When done, click Next and follow the succeeding onscreen instructions. Chapter 2 Installation Note: If WPS configuration failed, move your computer closer to the router then try again. Connecting via the PIN code 1. From the WPS Wizard, select Use the PIN code. Click Next. 2. Select the router that you want to connect to.
Chapter 2 - Installation Chapter 2 Installation 3. Click Next. The router's PIN code is displayed. 4. If your selected router’s status is Configured, key in the PIN code in the web user interface. Note: If your selected router's status is Unconfigured, proceed to the section Using the PIN code on an unconfigured router. 5. Wait until the WPS Wizard finishes applying the wireless settings.

Chapter 2 Installation Using the PIN code on an unconfigured router To use the PIN code on an unconfigured router: 1. Follow steps 1-3 in Connecting via the PIN code. 2. If your selected router's status is Unconfigured, the WPS Wizard screen below appears. Key in the PIN code in this screen. Click Next.
Chapter 2 - Installation Chapter 2 Installation 3. Wait until the WPS Wizard finishes applying the wireless settings. 4. Assign a name to your network. When done, click Next. If the router is used for the first time, the WPS Wizard assigns the SSID (network name) automatically. 5. Use the auto-generated passphrease as your network’s security key or manually assign a passphrase containing between 8 and 63 characters. When done, click Next.
Chapter 2 - Installation To configure the advanced security settings, click Show advanced network security options. Select the Security Method and manually key in your Security key or passphrase. Chapter 2 Installation 6. WPS Wizard is completed. Click Finish to close the WPS Wizard.
Chapter 2 - Installation Adding network devices using a USB flash drive With the WPS Wizard utility, you can add devices to your network using a USB flash drive. To add network devices using a USB flash drive: Chapter 2 Installation 1. In the WPS Wizard, click Save settings to a USB flash drive. 2. Plug a USB flash drive into the USB port on your computer, and then select the drive from the dropdown list. When done, click Next to continue.
Chapter 2 - Installation 3. Remove the USB flash drive from this computer, and then plug to the computer that you want to add to the wireless network. Chapter 2 Installation 4. Locate the SetupWireless.exe from the USB drive, and double-click to run it. Click Yes to add the computer to the wireless network. 5. Click OK to exit the Wireless Network Setup Wizard.
Chapter 2 - Installation Configuring with the WLAN utility (Infrastructure) Chapter 2 Installation Use ASUS WLAN utility to get connected with an existing wireless network. 1. Right-click the wireless connection icon and select Wireless Settings. 2. Check the Config page to set the SSID (network name) to that of your wireless AP. 3. Use Site Survey if you do not know the SSID of your access point. 4. Encryption settings must match those at the access point.
Chapter 2 - Installation Configuring with the WLAN utility (Ad Hoc) The WLAN Adapter supports Ad Hoc mode that allows communication between wireless stations without an AP. Chapter 2 Installation 1. Right-click the wireless connection icon and select Wireless Settings. 2. Click the Config button and set the WLAN Adapter to Ad Hoc connection mode. 3. Click the Survey button to scan for Ad Hoc nodes. Select the node you want to communicate with and press Connect. 4.

Chapter 3 - Software Reference Software Reference ASUS WLAN Control Center ASUS WLAN Control Center is an application which makes it easier to launch WLAN applications and activate network location settings. The WLAN Control Center starts automatically when the system boots up. When WLAN Control Center is running, you can see a Control Center icon on the Windows taskbar.

Activate Configuration – Click to choose a preset profile. Mobile Manager – Click to launch the Mobile Manager application. WPS Wizard – Click to launch the Wireless Protected Setup Wizard. Site Monitor – Click to launch the Site Monitor application. Change Mode – Click to change the mode.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference ASUS Wireless Settings The ASUS Wireless Settings utility allows you to manage your WLAN Adapter. It allows you to view or modify the configuration settings, and to monitor the operational status of your WLAN Adapter. Launching the ASUS Wireless Settings To launch the ASUS Wireless Settings, do any of the following: • • Click Start > All Programs > ASUS Utility > WLAN card > Wireless Settings.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Scanning... : The station is trying to authenticate and associate with an access point or Ad Hoc node. Disconnected: The WLAN Adapter is installed to the system, but not yet connected to a wireless device. SSID: Displays the Service Set Identifier (SSID) of the device that the adapter is either associated or intending to join. MAC address: Shows the hardware address of the WLAN Adapter.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Activate Configuration Auto roaming is enabled by default and makes the adapter automatically switch to APs with better signal. You can uncheck it if you want to connect to a specified AP using a particular profile. Status - Connection You can view the current link statistics about the WLAN Adapter. These statistics are updated once per second and are valid if the WLAN Adapter is correctly installed.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Status - IP Config IP Config tab shows all the current host and WLAN Adapter information including host name, DNS servers, IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway. Button IP Release - If you want to remove the current IP address, click this button to release the IP address from DHCP server. IP Renew - If you want to obtain a new IP address from DHCP server, click this button to renew the IP address.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Config - Basic This page enables you to change the WLAN Adapter configurations. Network Type Infrastructure – Infrastructure means to establish a connection with an access point. Once connected, the access point allows you to access wireless LAN and wired LAN (Ethernet). The Channel field turns to Auto if the connection is based on Infrastructure.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference PS Mode Constantly Awake Mode (CAM), also known as Disable Power Saving Mode, is a full powered state that yields the best performance. We recommend this mode for devices running on AC power. Fast PSP (Fast power-saving mode), which is also known as Enable Power Saving mode, periodically wakes up the system to check if there is any data being sent. We recommend this mode for devices running on battery power. Others Encryption – Click this link to show the "Encryption" tab.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Config - Encryption This page enables you to configure the Wireless LAN Adapter encryption settings. For data confidentiality in a wireless environment, IEEE 802.11 specifies a Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) algorithm to offer transmission privacy. The WEP uses keys to encrypt and decrypt data packets. The encryption process can scramble frame bits to avoid disclosure to others. The WPA/WPA2 is improved security system for 802.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Data encryption For Open and Shared authentication mode, the configuration options of encryption type are Disabled and WEP. For WPA, WPA-PSK, WPA2 and WPA2-PSK authentication mode, Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) encryption and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption are supported. Disabled - Disable the encryption function. WEP - WEP Key is used to encrypt your data before it is transmitted over air.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Select one as your Default Key The Default Key field allows you specify which of the four encryption keys is to use for transmitting data over wireless LAN. You can change the default key by clicking on the downward arrow, selecting the number of the key you want to use, and clicking the “Apply” button. If the access point or station with which you are communicating uses the identical key by the same sequence, you can use any of the keys as the default on your WLAN Adapter.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Config - Authentication This tab allows you to set the security settings to match those of your AP. It is configurable only if you have set Network Authentication to WPA or WPA2 in Config-Encryption tab. Authentication Type The authentication type methods include: Chapter 3 Software Reference PEAP: PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol) authentication is a version of Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP).
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Config - Advanced Click Advanced link on Config-Basic page to show this tab. This tab allows you to set up additional parameters for the wireless Adapter. We recommend using the default values for all items in this window. RTS Threshold (0-2347) The RTS/CTS (Request to Send/Clear to Send) function is used to minimize collisions among wireless stations. When RTS/CTS is enabled, the router refrains from sending a data frame until another RTS/CTS handshake is completed.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Soft AP (Windows XP/Vista) 1. Select Soft AP Mode 2. Drag and drop a wired network connection next to the globe icon. 3. Enable ICS* and Firewall if desired. Refer to Windows help for information on “ Internet Connection Sharing”. 4. You can easily switch between Soft AP and Station mode by right clicking the taskbar icon and selecting “A-S Change Mode”. Chapter 3 Software Reference Soft AP mode allows the Wireless LAN card to act as a virtual access point.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Soft AP (Windows XP/Vista) Soft AP mode allows you to configure Access Control settings. Access Control The AP provides facilities to limit the wireless clients that associate with it and the data packets that can forward through it. Filters provide network security or improve performance by eliminating broadcast/multicast packets from the radio network.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference The Event Log tracks messages associated with the Soft AP. Chapter 3 Software Reference Soft AP Mode will also provide two extra tabs on the Status pages - Association Table and Event Log. The Association Table shows clients that are currently connected to the Soft AP. IMPORTANT: If the end points of a chain are connected to each other a loop is created.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference • • • RSSI: The Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) transmitted by each network. This information is helpful in determining which network to connect to. The value is then normalized to a dBm value. Security: Wireless network encryption information. All devices in the network should use the same encryption method to ensure the communication. BSSID: The media access control (MAC) address of the access point or the Basic Service Set ID of the Ad Hoc node.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Link State Chapter 3 Software Reference WLAN Adapter “Link State” icon appears on the left side of the WLAN Adapter Settings. Use the icon to view the current signal status. Exit Wireless Settings To exit Wireless Settings, you can click OK or Cancel. Save Configuration - Click to save the current setting as a new profile. Later, when you make individual settings, you may want to use profiles to save our settings.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference ASUS Mobile Manager The Mobile Manager is a convenient tool to set up and manage network location settings. In different places, you have to reconfigure settings for confoming to the connectivity needs of the place. Mobile Manager lets users configure multiple alternative configurations for different locations. You just need to set once, and then easily activate a configuration with a push of a button when you change location.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference File menu New Configuration – Select this option to launch the New Configuration Wizard. See the next section for details. Import Configuration INI File. – Select this option to load a configuration from an Export Configuration – Save the selected configuration (containing Wireless Settings, TCP/IP Settings, Network Settings, etc.) to an INI file. The INI file may be saved on a floppy disk, and may be imported by other computers with the Mobile Manager utility.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Down – Lowers the position of the selected wireless network configuration in the preferred network list. Note: Edit menu commands appear when you right-click a configuration in the Mobile Manager window. View menu Large Icons – Displays large icons for each configuration. Small Icons – Displays small icons for each configuration. List – Shows a list of available configurations. Details – Displays the name, type, and description of a selected configuration.

Click Next when done. • • ASUS Wireless Local Area Network Configuration. Select this option if you have an installed ASUS USB Wireless LAN Adapter in your computer. Wired Local Area Network Configuration. Select this if your computer has an installed network interface card other than ASUS USB Wireless LAN Adapter. Dialup Networking Configuration.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference 5. Set the IP address of the configuration using this window. Specify the IP address using the DHCP server (automatic) or manual assignment. The wizard auto-detects and displays the current system settings. Click Next when done. 6. Enter the computer name, then click Next. Chapter 3 Software Reference 7. Use this window to set the proxy server and printer sharing. Click Advanced to display the proxy server and printer sharing options. Click Next when finished. 8.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Editing a configuration To edit a configuration: 1. Select a configuration from the Mobile Manager window. 2. Click Edit from the menu bar, then select Edit Configuration. The Edit Configuration dialog box appears. Navigate through the windows by clicking the buttons on the left. Chapter 3 Software Reference General settings Name – The configuration name indicates the location from where you are dialing or connecting to a network.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference SSID – SSID stands for Service Set Identifier, a string used to identify a wireless LAN. You can only connect with an Access Point, that has the same SSID. Use different SSIDs to segment the wireless LAN and add security. Channel – The Channel field allow you to select the radio channel for the ASUS Wireless LAN Adapter. In an Infrastructure network, your wireless LAN adapter automatically selects the correct frequency channel required to communicate with an Access Point.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Specify an IP address – Ask your network administrator for the IP address and subnet mask you should use. Type in the IP Address and Subnet Mask manually. TCP/IP settings-Gateway tab Specify the gateways. You may specify more than one gateway. Set up the primary gateway first. Add – Click this button to add a new TCP/IP gateway address. The added gateway appears in the Default gateways list. Repeat the process to add another gateway.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Enable Proxy Server – Use the Proxy server to access the Internet. Use the same proxy server for all protocols – Specifies whether you want to use the same proxy server to gain access to the Internet using all protocols. Servers field – Provides fields for you to type the address and port number of the proxy server you want to use to gain access to the Internet over HTTP, Secure, FTP, Gopher, and Socks protocol.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Site Monitor The Site Monitor utility measures the signal-to-noise (SNR) values of all available wireless networks. Use this utility to determine the best placement of access points in a wireless network. Launching Site Monitor To launch the Site Monitor: Click the Windows® Start button, then select Programs > ASUS Utility > WLAN Card > Site Monitor, or • Right-click the Control Center icon on the Windows taskbar, then select Site Monitor.
Chapter 3 - Software Reference Monitoring a connection To monitor a connection: 1. Select the connection from the list. 2. Click Command from the menu bar, then select monitor. You may also press in your keyboard. The Monitor window appears. Chapter 3 Software Reference The following connection parameters are displayed in graphical format. SNR. This indicates the communication quality within the current network. The communication quality is based on signal and noise level measurements.

It appears when you run the Control Center utility for the first time. Select the utility you want to use for configuring your WLAN Adapter. Only use Windows wireless function – Only use Windows® XP Wireless Zero Configuration service to configure the WLAN Adapter.

The green bars represent signal strength, with five bars indicating excellent signal and one bar indicating poor signal. Then right-click the network connection icon and select Property to open the Wireless Network Connection Status page. 2.

Right-click the network icon on the Windows® taskbar, then select Connect to a network to view the available networks. Select the access point and click Connect. 2. If you have set up the encryption key on your access point, key in the encryption key and click Connect. To set up the wireless connection properties: 1.

You may also push the WPS button on the access point to establish the wireless connection. Chapter 3 Software Reference 1. Right-click the network icon in the notification area, then select Open Network and Sharing Center. Click Connect to a network, select the access point and click Connect.
Chapter 4 - Application Application Setting up the XLink Mode To set up the XLink Mode on Windows® XP: 1. Click ASUS WLAN Control Center > Config > Advanced to enable the PSP Xlink Mode. 2.Turn on PSP to set up the configuration. 3.Select Network Settings.

Chapter 4 - Application 7. Select the game that is available for system-link you want to play then start the game connection. The PSP can provide you the SSID named PSP_**** to connect. Click ASUS WLAN Control Center > Survey to search the available connection, then select PSP_**** to connect. 8. When done, click Connect.
Chapter 5 - Troubleshooting Troubleshooting The following troubleshooting guides provide answers to some of the more common problems, which you may encounter while installing or using WLAN Adapter products. If you encounter difficulties that are not mentioned in this section, please contact the Wireless LAN Technical Support. Verify if the WLAN Adapter is installed correctly. When the WLAN Adapter setup is complete, you can verify if the driver has been setup properly.
Chapter 5 - Troubleshooting Cannot connect to a Station (WLAN Adapter) Follow the procedure below to configure your WLAN Adapter. a. Verify that the “Network Type” is in “Ad Hoc” mode. b. Verify that the “SSID” of your WLAN Adapter is set to the same “SSID” of the other station (or another WLAN Adapter). c. Verify that the “channel” of the WLAN Adapter is “Auto” or set to the same “channel” of the other station (or another WLAN Adapter). d.
