Chapter 1 Getting started Welcome Thank you for buying the ASUS O!PLAY LIVE Media Player! ASUS O!PLAY LIVE Media Player allows you to enjoy digital media files from your computer via UPnP function, portable USB/eSATA storage devices, memory cards, or over the network to your TV or entertainment system.

WiFi Blue Wi-Fi connection is active. Storage OFF No storage device is found. Blinking Detecting the storage device. Blue A storage device is found. Ensure that the IR receiver is not blocked. Otherwise, the Media Player will not be able to receive the command from the remote control.

Remote control Use the remote control to power on/off the O!PLAY LIVE Media Player, browse through menus, and select the media file to play, view, or listen to.
1 Power on/off Turn the HD media player on or off. Navigation/OK keys Press the up/down keys to move through the menu bar in a submenu. Press the up/down keys to decrease/increase a numerical value. 2 Press the left/right keys to move through the main menus in the Home screen. Press the left/right keys to move through the items in a submenu. Press OK to confirm the selection. 3 Return Returns to the previous screen. 4 Option Press to select the movie, music, and photo effects.
1-8 11 Zoom in Zooms in on the screen. 12 Next Goes to the next media file. 13 Stop Press to stop the playback. Press for three seconds to eject the disk from the external optical disk drive. 14 Forward Press to forward the playback. 15 Play / Pause Toggles between playback and pause. 16 Information Press to display the information about the movie, video, or music, and elapsed time. 17 Guide Press to view the Guide menu.
Getting your O!Play HD media player ready Connecting the power adapter To connect the power adapter: 1. Connect the AC power adapter to the DC-in port at the back of your HD media player. 2. Connect the AC power adapter to a power source. Connecting devices to your HD media player To connect devices to your HD media player: 1. Do any of the following to connect a display to your HD media player: • Use an HDMI cable to connect your HD media player to an HDTV or an HDMI monitor.
2. Do any of the following to connect a storage device or memory card to your HD media player: • Insert a USB/eSATA storage device such as a portable hard disk drive or a USB flash disk to the USB port or USB/eSATA combo port at the left side of your HD media player. • Insert a memory card such as SD/MMC, CF, and MS/MS-Duo cards into the appropriate card slot at the right side of your HD media player. SD/MMC/MS/xD You can also access media files from a shared folder of a network computer.
Starting for the first time When you start your HD media player for the first time, a series of screens appear to guide you in configuring the basic settings of your HD media player. To start for the first time: 1. Turn on your HD media player and your HDTV or HDMI monitor. 2. Set your HDTV or HDMI monitor to HDMI mode. 3. The Setup Wizard appears. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setup process. Use the remote control to navigate the screen.

Chapter 2 Network setup and services Connecting to a network Connecting to a network via wired or proxy server connection enables you to do network-related or Internet-related activities such as file sharing and online media streaming. For more details on online media streaming, refer to the section Streaming online media in Chapter 3. Wired connection Using DHCP IP (network setup with a router) Using DHCP IP allows the router to automatically assign an IP address for your media player.
2. Connect your computer and other necessary devices to your router. Refer to the documentation that came with your router. 3. Connect all the necessary devices to your HD media player. For more details, refer to the section Connecting devices to your HD media player in Chapter 1. 2-2 4. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Setup, then press . 5. Navigate to Network and press . 6. Select Wired Lan Setup and press . 7. Select DHCP IP (AUTO) as your setup type.
9. On the confirmation message, select Yes to save the setting. • If you cannot connect to your office network, contact your network administratior. • If you want to access shared network files, ensure that the computer’s files are shared on the network. For more details, refer to the section Sharing media files over the network in this chapter. Using FIX IP (network setup with a direct connection to a computer) Using FIX IP allows your media player to connect to a computer directly.
3. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Setup, then press . 4. Select Network > Wired Lan Setup and press . 5. Select FIX IP (MANUAL) and press . 6. From the FIX IP screen, key in the IP Address and Subnet Mask. Obtain the IP address and subnet mask from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). 7. On the confirmation message, select Yes to save the setting. 8.
Configuring the IP address settings for your computer To access the HD media player when using FIX IP, you must have the correct TCP/IP settings on your computer. Follow the instructions below that correspond to the operating system installed on your computer. Use the following default IP settings: • I P address: 192.168.0.xxx xxx can be any number between 2 and 254. Ensure that the IP address is not used by another device. • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (same as the HD media player) Windows® XP OS 1.
Windows® Vista/7 OS 2-6 1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center. Right-click Local Area Connection then select Properties. 2. Select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4), then click Properties. 3. Select Use the following IP address: and key in the IP address and Subnet mask. 4. Click OK when done.
Mac OS X 10.5.xx 1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click Network. 2. Select Manually. 3. Key in the IP Address and Subnet Mask. 4. Click Apply when done. 2 3 4 Checking the IP address of your computer To check the IP address of your computer under Windows® OS: 1. Click Start > Run. 2. In the Run window, key in cmd or command, and then click OK. 3. The MS DOS window appears. Key in ipconfig, and then press the Enter key. The IP address of your computer is displayed.

Sharing files over the network Sharing files under Windows® XP OS To configure your computer to allow folders to be shared: 1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connection > Network Setup Wizard. 2. Select Turn on file and printer shariing. 3. When done, click Finish. To share files under Windows® XP OS: 1. On your computer, select the folder containing the files that you want to share. 2. Right-click the selected folder, and select Sharing and Security.
3. Tick Share this folder. If you want to set permissions for the network users, click Permissions. Click Apply when done. 4. A hand icon appears on the folder indicating that the folder’s contents are shared over the network. Sharing files under Windows® Vista OS In Windows® Vista OS, you can share files in any of these two ways: • Share files from a folder on your computer. • Share files from the Public folder.
Sharing files from the Public folder The Public folder allows you to share your files with other people using your computer or with other users in the network. To share files from the Public folder: > Documents. 1. Click 2. From Favorite Links in the navigation pane, click Public. Put any files or folders that you want to share into any subfolders in the Public folder. To restrict access to the files and folders in the Public folder, refer to the succeeding sections.
Sharing files under Windows® 7 OS To configure your computer to allow folders to be shared: 1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Choose homegroup and sharing options > Change advanced sharing settings.... 2. Ensure that the following options are correctly selected: Turn on network discovery Turn on file and printer sharing Media streaming is off Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections (recommended) To share files under Windows® 7 OS: 2-12 1.
4. Check the Share this folder item, then click Permissions. 5. Select the network user that your want to share files, and set the access control options.
Sharing files under Mac OS X 10.5.xx To share a folder under Mac OS: 2-14 1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click Sharing. 2. Click the + icon to display the available folders. Navigate to the folder that you want to share. 3. Select the user account Everyone. 4. Repeat steps 2–3 to share other folders. 5. When done, click Options.... 6. Tick Share files and folders using SMB, and click Done.
Sharing files under Linux OS To share files under Linux OS: 1. On your computer, select the folder containing the files that you want to share. 2. Right-click the folder, and click Sharing > Windows Sharing. 3. From the Windows Sharing tab, tick the following items: Share this item and its contents, Allow all users, and Share Enabled. 4. Click OK when done. A hand icon appears on the folder indicating that the folder’s contents are shared over the network.

Chapter 3 Using your O!PLAY LIVE Media Player The Home screen The Home screen includes these main options: Movies, Photo, Music, File Manager, Internet Media, Setup, and Web Browser. File Manager allows you to view all your media files in your storage devices and network.
Configuring the O!Play Live settings To configure the O!Play Live settings: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Setup, then press . 2. Press the up/down keys / to navigate through System, Audio, Video, Network, and Firmware, then press to configure your selected category. 3. Press the up/down keys / to navigate to the item that you want to configure. 4. Press the previous/next keys / to change to a different category. Use the up/down keys necessary. 5.
Playing a movie Movie control buttons on the remote control Button Function Press to display the movie’s file information. Press to return to the previous screen. Press to toggle between playback and pause. Press to rewind the playback. Press repeatedly to change the rewinding speed to x1.5, x2, x4, x8, x16, x32, or normal speed (x1) Press to forward the playback. Press repeatedly to change the forward speed to x1.5, x2, x4, x8, x16, x32, or normal speed (x1) Press to stop the playback.
Playing a movie To play a movie: 1. �������������������������������� From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Movies, then press . 2. Using the up/down keys / , select the source of your movie file, then press . Before you can access a media file over the network, ensure that the folder containing the file is shared. For more details, refer to the section Sharing files over the network in Chapter 2. 3.
Playing music Movie control buttons on the remote control Button Function Press to display the music’s file information. Press to return to the previous screen. Press to toggle between playback and pause. Press to rewind the playback. Playing a music file To play a music file: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Music, then press . 2. Using the ������������� up/down keys / , select the source of your music file, then press . Before you can access a media file over the network, ensure that the folder containing the file is shared. For more details, refer to the section Sharing files over the network in Chapter 2. 3.
Configuring the audio playback settings The audio playback setting menu allows you to configure the audio settings such as Repeat options and Shuffle Loop. To configure the audio playback settings: 1. During playback, press to launch the audio playback setting menu. 2. Press the up/down ������������� keys / to select from any of these playback options: Repeat Off, Repeat On, Repeat All, and Shuffle Loop. Press to confirm the selection. To configure the audio settings from the Setup mode: 1.
• SPDIF Output: Select this setting for the S/PDIF audio receiver. Refer to the following descriptions of the options: • SPDIF LPCM: Select this option for the S/PDIF audio receiver. • S PDIF RAW: Select this option for the S/PDIF multichannel audio receiver. The raw data of the audio will be sent to the S/PDIF multichannel receiver for decoding. 3. �������������������� Press the right ���������� key to display the option for your selected audio setting.
Viewing photos To view photos: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Photo, then press . 2. Using the up/down keys / , select the source of your photo, then press . Locate the photo that you want to view. 3. Press to browse the photos. Press� to view the photos in slideshow mode. Viewing photos in slideshow mode To view photos in slideshow mode: 1. When the selected photo is displayed in full screen, press on the remote control to start the slideshow.
Setting the background music for the slideshow To set the background music for the slideshow: 1. Before viewing photos, go to Music and play music files first. 2. Press to return to the Home screen and then go to Photo to start the photo slideshow. The slideshow plays with the background music. Press instead of music will not play. while playing music files.
Streaming online media Your HD media player provides online media services including Netflix, YouTube-XL, Pandora, Picasa, Weather, Stock, Flickr, RSS News, Internet Radio, PodCast, and Internet TV. The online content is constantly added and updated. Visit the ASUS website at http://www.asus.com for the latest information. • Ensure that your HD media player is connected to the Internet. However, the network connection might be disabled if the internet link is abnormal or blocked.
3. Navigate to the desired online media service, then press to enter. You may add the favorite online media service to Favorite in the Internet Radio. Navigate to the online media service that you want to add as your favovite. Press the left key , select Add to My Favorite, and then press . Online streaming from Netflix You can connect your HD media player to your Netflix account and enjoy streaming unlimited TV episodes and movies to your high-definition external display.
Managing your files File Manager offers both the device management and media file management that allow you to browse the media files by Local HDD, USB, Card Reader, and Network, and UPNP. Ensure that your O!Play Live is correctly connected to a network. Refer to Chapter 2 for more details on connecting to a network. When you plug an external USB storage device such as flash disk or hard disk drive, your media player automatically scans, categorizes, and places the media types in their specific folders.
Renaming files/folders To rename files/folders: 3-14 / to navigate to File 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right ���������������� keys Manager, then press . 2. Locate the file or folder that you want to copy from any of these sources: USB, Card Reader, Network, and UPNP. 3. Press 4. To key in the new name for your file or folder, use the navigation keys to move through the virtual keyboard. 5.
Chapter 4 Troubleshooting Troubleshooting This section provides answers to some common problems that you may encounter while installing or using the ASUS O!PLAY LIVE Media Player. These problems require simple troubleshooting that you can perform by yourself. Contact ASUS Technical Support if you encounter problems not mentioned in this section. Display Q1. The media player does not work. You think that the problem might be with the media player’s power adapter.
• Ensure that your TV is switched to the appropriate video source (AV IN or HDMI). You may need to use your TV Remote control to change video sources. • Turn off your media player and wait for a few minutes before turning it on again or press the reset button at the back panel. • Ensure that the HDMI resolution of your TV supports 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. • When you turn off your media player, wait until it is completely turned off.
Q7. Only one video/music/photo is played when I selected it. How do I play the entire list? When selecting a video/music/photo to play, pressing the OK button on the remote control plays just the selected file while pressing the PLAY/PAUSE button plays the entire list of files. Audio Q1. There is no sound. • Ensure the volume on the entertainment unit is not on mute mode. • Go to Setup > Audio and ensure that you have the enabled the correct Digital Output setting.
Video Q1. How do I get the subtitle to play? • Ensure that the subtitle file and the movie file are in the same folder. • Ensure that the subtitle name is the same with the movie file (ex. movie.avi, movie.srt). Q2. There is no audio or there is an unstable audio during movie/ video playback The Media Player supports the most common movie/video file formats. However, there are almost an infinite variety of bit rates and sample rates.
Firmware Updates Q1. What is my HD media player’s firmware version? How do I upgrade it? • Check the firmware version before the upgrade process. If the firmware is the latest version, you will not need to update the firmware. • Go to Setup > Firmware > USB upgrade to perform the firmware upgrade process. • Go to Setup > Firmware > Online upgrade to perform the firmware upgrade process via the Internet. Ensure that you have Internet connection before upgrading the firmware via the Internet.
Q2. I cannot connect to the Wi-Fi network. • Ensure that you have properly configured your Wi-Fi settings. • Check the documentation that came with your router for the correct wireless settings. • The network you are trying to access may be protected, secured, or encrypted. If you are trying to connect to a wireless local area network (WLAN), contact your network administrator for the security and encryption settings. Q3.
Q7. There is too much lag while I am watching an online media website. • Slow connection or high Internet traffic may cause this problem. Try watching the online media during off-peak hours. • You may have limited bandwidth usage on your network. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to inquire about increasing your bandwidth for your network connection. Q8.
Q2. Why is it that it takes a while to enter the Movies, Music, or Photo screen from the Home screen? When you connect a new USB storage device, hard disk drive, or memory card, your HD media player automatically scans and indexes the files stored on these devices based on the files’ date stamps. This prevents you from quickly entering the Movies, Music, or Photo screen from the Home screen.
