Chapter 1 Getting started Welcome Thank you for buying the ASUS O!Play HD2 Media Player! ASUS O!Play HD2 Media Player allows you to enjoy digital media files from your computer via UPnP function, portable USB/eSATA storage devices, additional 3.5” hard disk drive, memory cards, or over the network to your TV or entertainment system.

Remote control Use the remote control to power on/off the O!Play HD2 media player, browse through menus, and select the media file to play, view, or listen to.
Display Press to display the file name, file type, and time. Disc menu Press to launch the disc menu if an external optical disk drive is installed. Edit Press to delete, rename, and move the files. 1 2 3 Repeat Press to repeat the playback of the currently playing music, movie, or photo file. 4 Stop Stops the playback. Rewind Press to rewind the playback. Previous Returns to the previous media file. Setup Launches the Setup menu. Option Press to select the movie, music, and photo effects.

Music shuffle Press to group all your music files in your storage device and then play the music files randomly. Zoom in Zooms in on the screen. Forward Press to forward the playback. Play/Pause Toggles between playback and pause. Next Goes to the next media file.
Getting your O!Play HD2 media player ready If you need warranty servicing for your HD media player, ensure that you send it back in its original packaging, which will provide better protection for your product during delivery. Warranty may be voided if the product is damaged due to improper packaging. ASUS will not compensate or replace any item damaged due to improper packaging. Installing the hard disk drive You may install a 3.5” hard disk drive to your HD media player.
To install the hard disk drive: 1. 2. Install the hard disk drive on the HDD bracket ( 1 ), and then secure it with four screws ( 2 ). Attach one end of the supplied HDD power and signal cable to the hard disk drive ( 3 ). 2 2 1 3 3. 4. 5. 6. Open the bottom lid of your HD media player. 5 4 Attach the other end of the supplied HDD power and signal cable to the HD media player ( 6 ). 8 Carefully insert the HDD bracket to the HD media player ( 7 ).

Connecting the power adapter 2 3 1 To connect the power adapter: 1. 2. 3. Connect the AC power cord to the AC adapter. Connect the AC adapter to the DC-in port at the back of your HD media player. Connect the AC adapter to a power source. Connecting devices to your HD media player To connect devices to your HD media player: 1. Do any of the following to connect a display to your HD media player: • Use an HDMI cable to connect your HD media player to an HDTV or an HDMI monitor.
• Use the bundled composite AV cable to connect your HD media player to a standard TV. • Use a YPbPr video cable and the bundled composite AV cable to connect your HD media player to a TV or monitor. • Use the RCA audio cable to connect your HD media player to the Cine5 PC speaker. The RCA cable is bundled with your Cine5 PC speaker. 2. Do any of the following to connect a storage device or memory card to your HD media player: • Insert a USB/eSATA storage device such as a portable hard disk drive or a USB flash disk to the USB port or USB/eSATA combo port at the left side of your HD media player.
3. 4. 5. 6. Use either the bundled composite AV cable or an S/PDIF cable to connect your audio system to your HD media player. Plug the HD media player’s power cable to a power source. Turn on the HDTV, TV, or HDMI monitor. If you are using an HDTV or a standard TV, set your HDTV/TV to video mode. If you are using an HDMI monitor, ensure that the monitor’s display resolution is set to HDMI. Refer to the documentation that came with your HDMI monitor.

Chapter 2 Network setup and services Connecting to a network Using DHCP IP (network setup with a router) Using DHCP IP allows the router to automatically assign an IP address for your media player. Desktop PC or Notebook SPLENDID MENU LAN Router LAN To connect to your network: 1. 2. Connect one end of the RJ-45 cable to the LAN port at the back of your HD media player and the other end to the LAN port of the router. Connect your computer and other necessary devices to your router.
4. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Setup, then press . You may also press the Setup menu. to launch 5. Select Network > Wired Lan Setup and press . 6. Select DHCP IP (AUTO) and press 7. Select either DNS (AUTO) or DNS (Manual) as your setup type and press : . • If you select DNS (AUTO), the router automatically assigns an DNS server IP address for your media player. • If you select DNS (Manual), key in the DNS Server IP address.
Using FIX IP (network setup with a direct connection to a computer) Using FIX IP allows your media player to connect to a computer directly. Desktop PC or Notebook SPLENDID MENU LAN To connect to your network: 1. 2. Connect one end of the RJ-45 cable to the LAN port at the back of your HD media player and the other end to the computer. Connect all the necessary devices to your HD media player. For more details, refer to the section Connecting devices to your HD media player in Chapter 1. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Configuring the IP address settings for your computer To access the HD media player when using FIX IP, you must have the correct TCP/IP settings on your computer. Follow the instructions below that correspond to the operating system installed on your computer. Use the following default IP settings: • I P address: 192.168.0.xxx xxx can be any number between 2 and 254. Ensure that the IP address is not used by another device. • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (same as the HD media player) Windows® XP OS 1.
Windows® Vista/7 OS 1. 2. 3. 4. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center. Right-click Local Area Connection then select Properties. Select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4), then click Properties. Select Use the following IP address: and key in the IP address and Subnet mask. Click OK when done. 2-6 e7263_oplayhd2_contents.
Mac OS X 10.5.xx 1. 2. 3. 4. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click Network. Select Manually. Key in the IP Address and Subnet Mask. Click Apply when done. Checking the IP address of your computer To check the IP address of your computer under Windows® OS: 1. Click Start > Run. 3. The MS DOS window appears. Key in ipconfig, and then press the Enter key. The IP address of your computer is displayed. 2. In the Run window, key in cmd or command, and then click OK.
PPPoE PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) is a specification for connecting multiple computer users on an Ethernet local area network to a remote site through common customer premises equipment. PPPoE provides the ability to connect a network of hosts over a simple bridging access device to a remote Access Concentrator. Many apartment houses, hotels, and corporations are now providing shared Internet access over DSL lines using Ethernet and PPPoE.
DLNA DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is a standard used by manufacturers of consumer electronics to allow entertainment devices within the home to share and enjoy their content with each other across a home network. The digital home is an evolution of the idea that PCs, consumer electronics and mobile devices should work together seamlessly through a wired or wireless network to share digital content within a home environment.
UPnP O!Play HD2 supports UPnP. The music, pictures and video files on the UPnP media server will be sorted automatically. Ensure that the Windows Media Player 11 is installed on your computer as the UPnP media server. To set up UPnP for Windows® XP: 1. 2. 3. Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Click Add/Remove Windows Components. Select Networking Services, then click Details. 4. Select Internet Gateway Discovery and Control Client and UPnP User Interface.
6. Find the HTTP SSL, SSDP Discovery Service, Universal Plug and Play Device Host, and Windows Media Player items, and change their Startup Type to Automatic. To add the media files to the library of Windows Media Player 11: 1. Open the Windows Media Player 11 on your computer. 2. ������ Click Library > Add to Library to add the media files into this database. Refer to the Windows Help for more detailed instructions. Some file formats may not be supported by the Windows Media Player.
To set up the Windows Media Player 11: 1. 2. 3. Ensure that the network setting on your computer is correct, and your O!Play HD2 is on the Home screen. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to ��������������� navigate to File Manager, then press� . Navigate to UPnP, then press . You may also enter the UPnP media server from the Movies/Music/Photo menus. Refer to chapter 3 for details. 4. Open the Windows Media Player 11 on your computer, and click Library > Media Sharing.
5. Check the item Share my media and an Unknown Device icon appears on the screen. Select this icon, then click Allow and OK. The Unknown Device is your O!Play HD2 Media Player. If the Unknown Device icon does not appear on the screen, click Settings. Check the item Allow new devices and computers automatically, and click OK. To use media files through the UPnP media server: 1. Now you should be able to see your computer (UPnP media server) in the UPnP device list.
Sharing files over the network Sharing files under Windows® XP OS To configure your computer to allow folders to be shared: 1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connection > Network Setup Wizard. 2. Select Turn on file and printer shariing. 3. When done, click Finish. To share files under Windows® XP OS: 1. 2. On your computer, select the folder containing the files that you want to share. Right-click the selected folder, and select Sharing and Security.
3. 4. Tick Share this folder. If you want to set permissions for the network users, click Permissions. Click Apply when done. A hand icon appears on the folder indicating that the folder’s contents are shared over the network. Sharing files under Windows® Vista OS In Windows® Vista OS, you can share files in any of these two ways: • • Share files from a folder on your computer. Share files from the Public folder.
Sharing files from the Public folder The Public folder allows you to share your files with other people using your computer or with other users in the network. To share files from the Public folder: 1. 2. > Documents. Click From Favorite Links in the navigation pane, click Public. Put any files or folders that you want to share into any subfolders in the Public folder. To restrict access to the files and folders in the Public folder, refer to the succeeding sections.
Sharing files under Windows® 7 OS To configure your computer to allow folders to be shared: 1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Choose homegroup and sharing options > Change advanced sharing settings. 2. Ensure that the following options are correctly selected: Turn on network discovery Turn on file and printer sharing Media streaming is off Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections (recommended) To share files under Windows® 7 OS: 1. 2. 3.

Sharing files under Mac OS X 10.5.xx To share a folder under Mac OS: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click Sharing. Click the + icon to display the available folders. Navigate to the folder that you want to share. Add the User group Everyone. Repeat steps 2–3 to share other folders. When done, click Options.... Chapter 3 Using your O!Play HD2 media player The Home screen The Home screen includes these main options: Movies, Music, Photo, File Manager, On-line Media, NAS, and Setup. The option File Manager allows you to view all your media files in your storage devices and network. 3-1 e7263_oplayhd2_contents.
Configuring the O!Play HD2 settings To configure the O!Play HD2 settings: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Setup, then press . Playing a video file To play a video file: 1. �������������������������������� From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Movies, then press . Your O!Play HD2 supports only the homemade VCD/DVD. 2. 3. Plug the external optical disk dirve to your O!Play HD2, and place the VCD/DVD into the drive. The VCD/DVD automatically displays the main menu. You may press to launch the VCD/DVD playback setting menu, and to eject the VCD/DVD from the external optical disk drive. Configuring the subtitle settings The Subtitle key and color. allows you to configure the subtitle settings such as font size • Ensure that the subtitle status is set to On.
Configuring the video playback settings The video playback setting menu allows you to configure ����������������������� several video settings such as Aspect Ratio, Subtitle settings, Audio configuration, Playback Search, Repeat options, Skip duration options, and Zoom settings. To configure the video playback settings: 1. 2. 3. During playback, press to launch the video playback setting menu. Press the up/down keys / to navigate to the the function that you want to configure.
Playing music Music control buttons on the remote control Button Function Press to enter the Music mode. Press to display the song’s file source, file name, file format, and elapsed time. For more details, refer to the section Sharing files over the network in Chapter 2. 3. Use the up/down keys / to locate the music that you want to listen. Press or to play the music.
Configuring the audio playback settings The audio playback setting menu allows you to configure the audio settings such as Repeat options and Shuffle Loop. To configure the audio playback settings: 1. 2. During playback, press to launch the audio playback setting menu. Press the up/down keys / to navigate to the the function that you want to configure. Press to confirm the selection. To configure the audio settings from the Setup mode: 1. 2.
Viewing photos Viewing photos To view photos: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to ��������������� navigate to Photo, then press� . ������������������� You may also press Photo mode. 2. 3. to enter the Using the up/down keys / , select the source of your photo, then press . Locate the photo that you want to view. Press to browse the photos. Press� to view the photos in slideshow mode. You may press to delete, rename, and move the selected file.
Setting the background music for the slideshow To set the background music for the slideshow: 1. Before viewing photos, go to Music and play music files first. 2. Press to return to the Home screen and then go to Photo to start the photo slideshow. The slideshow plays with the background music. Press instead of music will not play. while playing music files.
File Manager The File Manager offers both the device management and media file management that allow you to browse the media files by file types (All Media, Movies, Photos, and Music) and file sources (USB, Network, and UPnP). • �������������������������������������������������������������������������� Ensure that your O!Play HD2 is correctly connected to a network. Refer to Chapter 2 for more details on connecting to a network.
On-line Media The On-line Media feature provides online media services, such as Internet Radio, Weather, and Stock. The online content is constantly added and updated. Visit the ASUS website for the latest information. Ensure that your O!Play HD2 is connected to the internet. However, the network connection might be disabled if the internet link is abnormal or blocked. To use the online media services on your O!Play HD2: 1.
NAS NAS ( Network-attached storage) is a device connected to a network that only provides file-based data storage services to other devices on the network. The NAS function allows all networked servers to share their storage files with networked clients. • You must have the hard disk drive installed on your O!Play HD2 for using the NAS function. • Ensure that your O!Play HD2 is correctly connected to the network. Refer to Chapter 2 for more details on connecting to a network.
4. 5. Open the web browser of your computer that is correctly connected to a NAS network. Enter the same IP address that is set up on your O!Play HD2. To obtain the IP address of your O!Play HD2, press to launch the Setup menu. Select System > Network Info, then press . 6. Enter the necessary setting for the server you selected, then press Apply to start using NAS function.
Using iPhone to control your O!Play HD2 You may use iPhone to control your O!Play HD2 via the internet link. • Ensure that your O!Play HD2 is correctly connected to the network. Refer to Chapter 2 for more details on connecting to a network. • Ensure that the router connected to your O!Play HD2 suppots the WiFi function. To use iPhone to control your O!Play HD2: 1. 2. Turn on the WiFi function on your iPhone, and connect it to your O!Play HD2.

Chapter 4 Troubleshooting Troubleshooting This section provides answers to some common problems that you may encounter while installing or using the ASUS O!Play HD2 media player. These problems require simple troubleshooting that you can perform by yourself. Contact ASUS Technical Support if you encounter problems not mentioned in this section. Display Q1. The media player does not work. You think that the problem might be with the media player’s power adapter.
• Turn off your media player and wait for a few minutes before turning it on again or press the reset button at the back panel. • Ensure that the HDMI resolution of your TV supports 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. • After turing off your media player, wait for a few seconds until the poweroff process is completed. During the power-off process, do not press the remote control repeatedly. Abnormal power-off might lead your media player to crash.
Q8. The LEDs on the Ethernet port do not blink and my wired connection does not work. • Ensure that the LAN Cable plug is firmly connected to the Ethernet port of the Media Player’s rear panel. • Try to replace a functional LAN cable. • Try to reconnect the LAN cable to the Media Player to keep the network connection active. Audio Q1. There is no sound. • Ensure the volume on the entertainment unit is not on mute mode.
USB storage device Q1. I cannot find any of my music, movie, or photo files. • Ensure that your USB storage device (USB Flash/USB HDD ) is not in standby mode. • Ensure that the files are supported file format. Q2. The Media Player does not recognize my USB storage device. Your USB storage device may not be detected because of problems with the USB hardware driver, USB cable, or longer system response time.
Wired and Internet connections Q1. I cannot connect to the wired network. You need to select either DHCP IP (AUTO) or FIX IP (MANUAL) as your setup type. If you select DHCP IP (AUTO), key in the DNS server’s IP address. The DNS server automatically assigns an IP address for your media player. If you select FIX IP (MANUAL), key in the IP address and Subnet Mask. Q2.
Operation/function failure Q1. An operation/function failed on my HD media player. Disconnect the AC adapter from the power source, then plug it in again. If you still encounter the same problem, contact the ASUS Technical Support. 4-6 e7263_oplayhd2_contents.
