Chapter 1 Getting started Welcome Thank you for buying the ASUS O!PLAY GALLERY Media Player! ASUS O!PLAY GALLERY Media Player allows you to enjoy digital media files from your computer via UPnP function, portable USB/eSATA storage devices, additional 3.5” hard disk drive, memory cards, or over the network to your TV or entertainment system.

Remote control Use the remote control to power on/off the O!PLAY GALLERY media player, browse through menus, and select the media file to play, view, or listen to.
Display Press to display the file name, file type, and elapsed time. 1 2 [BaV iPod Press to enter the iPod mode. 3 Slow motion Press to playback the currently playing movie in slow motion. Previous Returns to the previous media file. Setup Launches the Setup menu.

Getting your O!PLAY GALLERY media player ready If you need warranty servicing for your HD media player, ensure that you send it back in its original packaging, which will provide better protection for your product during delivery. Warranty may be voided if the product is damaged due to improper packaging. ASUS will not compensate or replace any item damaged due to improper packaging. Installing the hard disk drive You may install a 3.5” hard disk drive to your HD media player.
3. Open the bottom lid of your HD media player. 4. Attach the other end of the supplied HDD power and signal cable to the HD media player. 5. Carefully insert the HDD bracket to the HD media player. 6. Secure the HDD bracket to the HD media player with four screws. 7. Collect the HDD power and signal cable into the HD media player so that you could completely cover the bottom lid on it. 6 6 6 6 4 5 7 8. 1-10 Close the bottom lid of your HD media player.
Connecting the power adapter 2 3 1 To connect the power adapter: 1. Connect the AC power cord to the AC adapter. 2. Connect the AC adapter to the DC-in port at the back of your HD media player. 3. Connect the AC adapter to a power source. Connecting devices to your HD media player To connect devices to your HD media player: 1. Do any of the following to connect a display to your HD media player: • Use an HDMI cable to connect your HD media player to an HDTV or an HDMI monitor.
2. Do any of the following to connect a storage device or memory card to your HD media player: • Insert a USB/eSATA storage device such as a portable hard disk drive or a USB flash disk to the USB port or USB/eSATA combo port at the front panel of your HD media player. • Insert a memory card such as SD/MMC, CF, and MS/MS-Duo cards into the appropriate card slot at the front panel of your HD media player. You can also access media files from a shared folder of a network computer.
Starting for the first time When you start your HD media player for the first time, a series of screens appear to guide you in configuring the basic settings of your HD media player. To start for the first time: 1. Turn on your HD media player and your HDTV or HDMI monitor. 2. Set your HDTV or HDMI monitor to video (AV) or HDMI mode. Refer to the documentation that came with your HDTV or HDMI monitor. 3. The Setup Wizard appears. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setup process.

Chapter 2 Network setup and services Connecting to a network Connecting to a network via wired or wireless connection enables you to do network-related or Internet-related activities such as file sharing and online media streaming. For more details on online media streaming, refer to the section Streaming online media in Chapter 3. Wired connection Using DHCP IP (network setup with a router) Using DHCP IP allows the router to automatically assign an IP address for your media player.
2. Connect your computer and other necessary devices to your router. Refer to the documentation that came with your router. 3. Connect all the necessary devices to your HD media player. For more details, refer to the section Connecting devices to your HD media player in Chapter 1. 4. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Setting, then press . You may also press to launch the Setting menu. 2-2 5. Navigate to Network and press . 6. Select Wired Connection and press . 7.

Click OK to save the setting. • If you cannot connect to your office network, contact your network administratior. • If you want to access shared network files, ensure that the computer’s files are shared on the network. For more details, refer to the section Sharing media files over the network in this chapter. Using Fixed IP (network setup with a direct connection to a computer) Using Fixed IP allows your media player to connect to a computer directly.
3. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Setting, then press . You may also press to launch the Setting menu. 4. Navigate to Network and press� . 5. Select Wired Connection and ���� press . 6. Select Manual setting (Fixed IP) and ����� press . 7. From the IP Address Setting screen, key in the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS address. Obtain the IP address and subnet mask from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). 8. Click OK to save the setting. 9.
Configuring the IP address settings for your computer To access the HD media player when using FIX IP, you must have the correct TCP/IP settings on your computer. Follow the instructions below that correspond to the operating system installed on your computer. Use the following default IP settings: • I P address: 192.168.0.xxx xxx can be any number between 2 and 254. Ensure that the IP address is not used by another device. • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (same as the HD media player) Windows® XP OS 1.
Windows® Vista/7 OS 2-6 1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center. Right-click Local Area Connection then select Properties. 2. Select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4), then click Properties. 3. Select Use the following IP address: and key in the IP address and Subnet mask. 4. Click OK when done.
Mac OS X 10.5.xx 1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click Network. 2. Select Manually. 3. Key in the IP Address and Subnet Mask. 4. Click Apply when done. 2 3 4 Checking the IP address of your computer To check the IP address of your computer under Windows® OS: 1. Click Start > Run. 2. In the Run window, key in cmd or command, and then click OK. 3. The MS DOS window appears. Key in ipconfig, and then press the Enter key. The IP address of your computer is displayed.
2. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Setting, then press . You may also press to launch the Setting menu. 3. Navigate to Network and press 4. Select Wireless Connection and press 5. From the list, select an item (Connect 1 ~ Connect 3) to create a connection profile, then press . 6. Select any of these connection modes: . . • Auto Infrastructure (AP): If you select this mode, your HD media player searches and displays the list of available wireless networks.
Proxy server connection You can set up your HD media player to connect to a proxy server. To connect to a proxy server: 1. Connect your computer, HD media player, and other necessary devices to your network via wired or wireless connection. For more details, refer to the previous sections on wired/wireless connection. 2. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Setting, then press . You may also press to launch the Setting menu. 3. Navigate to Network and press 4.
Sharing files over the network Sharing files under Windows® XP OS To configure your computer to allow folders to be shared: 1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connection > Network Setup Wizard. 2. Select Turn on file and printer shariing. 3. When done, click Finish. To share files under Windows® XP OS: 2-10 1. On your computer, select the folder containing the files that you want to share. 2. Right-click the selected folder, and select Sharing and Security.
3. Tick Share this folder. If you want to set permissions for the network users, click Permissions. Click Apply when done. 4. A hand icon appears on the folder indicating that the folder’s contents are shared over the network. Sharing files under Windows® Vista OS In Windows® Vista OS, you can share files in any of these two ways: • Share files from a folder on your computer. • Share files from the Public folder.
Sharing files from the Public folder The Public folder allows you to share your files with other people using your computer or with other users in the network. To share files from the Public folder: > Documents. 1. Click 2. From Favorite Links in the navigation pane, click Public. Put any files or folders that you want to share into any subfolders in the Public folder. To restrict access to the files and folders in the Public folder, refer to the succeeding sections.
Sharing files under Windows® 7 OS To configure your computer to allow folders to be shared: 1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Choose homegroup and sharing options > Change advanced sharing settings.... 2. Ensure that the following options are correctly selected: Turn on network discovery Turn on file and printer sharing Media streaming is off Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections (recommended) To share files under Windows® 7 OS: 1.
2-14 4. Check the Share this folder item, then click Permissions. 5. Select the network user that your want to share files, and set the access control options.
Sharing files under Mac OS X 10.5.xx To share a folder under Mac OS: 1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences. Click Sharing. 2. Click the + icon to display the available folders. Navigate to the folder that you want to share. 3. Select the user account Everyone. 4. Repeat steps 2–3 to share other folders. 5. When done, click Options.... 6. Tick Share files and folders using SMB, and click Done.
Sharing files under Linux OS To share files under Linux OS: 2-16 1. On your computer, select the folder containing the files that you want to share. 2. Right-click the folder, and click Sharing > Windows Sharing. 3. From the Windows Sharing tab, tick the following items: Share this item and its contents, Allow all users, and Share Enabled. 4. Click OK when done. A hand icon appears on the folder indicating that the folder’s contents are shared over the network.
Chapter 3 Using your O!PLAY GALLERY media player The Home screen The Home screen includes these main options: Movie, Music, My Life, iPod, Setting, Favorite, File Manager, and Internet. • File Manager allows you to view all your media files in your storage devices and network. • To move through the main menus in the Home screen, you may either rotate the rotary knob to the left/right or press the left/right keys / on the remote control.
Configuring the O!PLAY GALLERY settings To configure the O!PLAY GALLERY settings: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Setting, then press . You may also press to launch the Setting menu. 3-2 2. Press the up/down keys / to �������������������� navigate through Video, Audio, Network, and System, then press the ���������� right key or to allow you to select the item that you want to configure. 3. Press the up/down keys� / to navigate to the item that you want to configure.
Playing a movie Movie control buttons on the remote control Button Function Press to enter the Movies mode. Press to display the video’s file source, file name, file format, and elapsed time. Press to return to the previous screen. Press to toggle between playback and pause. Press to playback the currently playing movie in slow motion. Press resume normal playback. to Press to rewind the playback. Press repeatedly to change the rewinding speed to x1.
Playing a movie To play a movie: 1. ���������������������������� From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Movies, then press . You may also press to enter the Movies mode. 2. Using the up/down keys / , select the source of your movie file, then press . Before you can access a media file over the network, ensure that the folder containing the file is shared. For more details, refer to the section Sharing files over the network in Chapter 2. 3.
Configuring the movie playback settings The movie playback setting menu allows you to configure ������������������������ the movie settings such as Subtitle Settings and Color Adjustment. To configure the movie playback settings: 1. During playback, press to launch the movie playback setting menu. 2. Press the up/down keys / to navigate to the the function that you want to configure. Press to enter its submenu to confirm the selection. 3.
Button Function Press to return to the previous music file. Press to go to the next music file. Press to configure the music playback settings. Press to launch the Setting menu. Press to disable audio output. Press to group all your music files in your storage device and then play the music files randomly. Press to repeat the playback of the currently playing music. Playing a music file To play a music file: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Music, then press .
3. Use the up/down keys / to locate the music that you want to listen. Press or to play the music. ������������������� You may also press to import the selected file. ;_badf • Press to group all your music files in your storage device and then play the music files randomly. • Press to repeat the playback of the currently playing music. Configuring the audio playback settings Configure the audio playback settings from the Setting menu. To configure the audio playback settings: 1.
Setting up your music playlist Creating a music playlist Before creating a playlist, ensure that you have imported music files to your HD media player. For more details, refer to the section Importing files/folders in this chapter. To create a music playlist: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to Music, then press . You may also press to enter the Music mode. 2. From the Music menu, select Playlist > New Playlist. 3.
Managing your photos / videos with My Life My Life feature allows you to view photos/videos in slideshow format or with background music, configure the photo/video playback settings, add tag/rating/ shortcut, and create an album or a playlist for your photos or videos. Setting up your photo/video playlist Creating a photo/video playlist Before creating a playlist, ensure that you have imported photos or video files to your HD media player.
Viewing photos Photo control buttons on the remote control Button Function Press to enter the My Life mode. Press to display the photos’ file source, time/date taken, and photo resolution. Press to view the photos in slideshow mode. Press again to pause the slideshow. Press to return to the source folder. Press to configure the photo playback settings. Press to increase the volume for the slideshow’s background music. Press to decrease the volume for the slideshow’s background music..
Viewing photos in slideshow mode To view photos in slideshow mode: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right ���������������� keys / to ��������������� navigate to My Life, then press� . ������������������� You may also press to enter the My Life mode. 2. ��������������������� Use the up/down keys / to locate the photo source, then press . Before you can access a media file over the network, ensure that the folder containing the file is shared.
Playing a video Video control buttons on the remote control Button Function Press to enter the My Life mode. Press to display the video’s file source, file name, file format, and elapsed time. Press to return to the previous screen. Press to toggle between playback and pause. Press to rewind the playback. Press repeatedly to change the rewinding speed to x1.5, x2, x4, x8, x16, x32, or normal speed (x1) Press to forward the playback. Press repeatedly to change the forward speed to x1.
Playing a video To play a video: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right ���������������� keys / to ��������������� navigate to My Life, then press� . ������������������� You may also press to enter the My Life mode. 2. ��������������������� Use the up/down keys / to locate the video source, then press . Before you can access a media file over the network, ensure that the folder containing the file is shared. For more details, refer to the section Sharing files over the network in Chapter 2. 3.
Streaming online media Your HD media player provides online media services including Netflix, Flickr, Picasa, TV, and Radio. The online content is constantly added and updated. Visit the ASUS website at http://www.asus.com for the latest information. • Ensure that your HD media player is connected to the Internet. However, the network connection might be disabled if the internet link is abnormal or blocked.
3. Navigate to the desired online media service, then press to enter. You may add the favorite online media service to Favorite in the Internet Radio. Navigate to the online media service that you want to add as your favovite. Press the left key� , select Add to My Favorite, and then press . Online streaming from Netflix You can connect your HD media player to your Netflix account and enjoy streaming unlimited TV episodes and movies to your high-definition external display.
Managing your files File Manager offers both the device management and media file management that allow you to browse the media files by Local HDD, USB, Card Reader, and Network. Ensure that your O!PLAY GALLERY is correctly connected to a network. Refer to Chapter 2 for more details on connecting to a network. Importing files/folders Imported files or folders are stored in your HD media player. To import files/folders: 1.
Renaming files/folders To rename files/folders: 1. From the Home screen, press the left/right keys / to navigate to File Manager, then press . 2. Locate the file or folder that you want to copy from any of these sources: Local HDD, USB, Card Reader, and Network. 3. Press� 4. To key in the new name for your file or folder, use the navigation keys to move through the virtual keyboard. 5.

From the HD media player’s home screen, press the ����� left/ right keys / to ��������������� navigate to iPod, then press� . �������� You may also press [BaV to enter the iPod mode. 5. ������������������������ Use the ���������������� left/right keys / to locate the media type that you want to play, then p����� ress . 6. ��������������������������� Use the navigation keys to browse or������������������ locate the media file that you want to play, then p����� ress to confirm the selection. 7.
Chapter 4 Troubleshooting Troubleshooting This section provides answers to some common problems that you may encounter while installing or using the ASUS O!PLAY GALLERY media player. These problems require simple troubleshooting that you can perform by yourself. Contact ASUS Technical Support if you encounter problems not mentioned in this section. Display Q1. The media player does not work. You think that the problem might be with the media player’s power adapter.
• Turn off your media player and wait for a few minutes before turning it on again or press the reset button at the back panel. • Ensure that the HDMI resolution of your TV supports 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. • When you turn off your media player, wait until it is completely turned off. DO NOT press the remote control repeatedly when the remote control is in the power-off process. Doing so will cause your media player to malfunction.
Q8. The LEDs on the Ethernet port do not blink and my wired connection does not work. • Ensure that the LAN Cable plug is firmly connected to the Ethernet port of the Media Player’s rear panel. • Try to replace a functional LAN cable. • Try to reconnect the LAN cable to the Media Player to keep the network connection active. Audio Q1. There is no sound. • Ensure the volume on the entertainment unit is not on mute mode.
USB storage device Q1. I cannot find any of my music, movie, or photo files. • Ensure that your USB storage device (USB Flash/USB HDD ) is not in standby mode. • Ensure that the files are supported file format. Q2. The Media Player does not recognize my USB storage device. Your USB storage device may not be detected because of problems with the USB hardware driver, USB cable, or longer system response time.
• If the media player is shut down or powered off during the software installation, the update will fail. If the device will not power on, you will need to reset it. This will restore the device back to its default settings. The firmware update can be attempted again at this point. Wired, Wi-Fi, and Internet connections Q1. I cannot connect to the Wi-Fi network. • Ensure that you have properly configured your Wi-Fi settings.
Q5. How do I share folders in the network? If you want to access shared network files, ensure that the network computer’s files are shared on the network. For more details, refer to the section Sharing files over the network. Q6. There is too much lag while I am watching an online media website. • Slow connection or high Internet traffic may cause this problem. Try watching the online media during off-peak hours. • You may have limited bandwidth usage on your network.
• Using a pointed object, press the reset button located at the rear panel. • �������������������������������������������������������������������� If you still encounter the same problem, contact the ASUS Technical Support. 4-8 Error Message Action Unable to compile media library on the read-only storage device. 1. Eject and disconnect the USB device from the media player. 2. Connect the USB device to your computer and make sure the read-only protection is disabled. 3. Attach the USB device to the media player again. Unrecognized storage device. The USB device model is not supported. Use another USB device. Question XX: WD USB HDD Trouble Shooting This indicates a system diagnostic failure.
