Introduction English This manual provides information on how to use the Eee Top ET16 Series software tools that satisfy your everyday needs in different aspects: • • • Easy • Eee Bar • Easy Mode • Easy Update Work • StarOffice™ 8 (StarSuite™ 8) • SoftStylus Web • Opera • • • Communication • Eee Cam • Eee Memo Fun • Eee Cinema • Eee Splendid Sharing • ASUS AI Direct Link To perform an action in any software tool, use your finger, the stylus pen, the keyboard or, the mouse.
Eee Bar English Eee ��������������������������������������������������������������� Bar resides on the desktop allowing you to launch applications ����������������������������� quickly. You can also select a power saving mode for the system and control the front LED light. Eee Bar is automatically launched when the OS starts, and by default it is hidden. Click an empty space on the desktop to display Eee Bar.
Eee Manager English Application Allows you to launch applications by clicking the respective icons. SoftStylus Allows you to launch SoftStylus, a fingerwriting recognition application with virtual keyboard. ASUS Super Hybrid Engine (ASHE) Allows you to select a power saving mode from Super Performance, High Performance, and Power Saving. Click Yes to the confirmation box. LED Allows you to turn on/off the front LED light or adjust its brightness.
Easy Mode English Easy Mode is a function-oriented mode that divides computer functions into four categories— Communication, Fun, Work, and Tools—allowing you to have quick access to applications easily. You may shift between Windows and Easy Mode any time; the applications in Easy Mode are the same as those in Windows. Launching Easy Mode When entering Windows OS, you will be asked if you want to enter Easy Mode.
Easy Mode desktop English The Easy Mode desktop is organized into the following function tabs: Communication, Fun, Work, and Tools. Click a function tab to display the applications you need.
ASUS Easy Update 1. From the Windows® notification area, right-click the ASUS Easy Update icon. 2. Select Schedule to set how often you want to update your system. Select Update to activate the update. 3. 4. Click OK to display the items you can download. 5. Check the item(s) you want to download, and then click OK. Eee Top ET16 Series English ASUS Easy Update is a software tool that automatically detects and downloads the latest BIOS, drivers, and applications for your Eee Top.
StarSuite 8 English StarSuite 8 is a complete office suite software package that allows you to edit a document, calculate on a spreadsheet, prepare presentation slides, make charts or sketches, and build your own database. StarSuite is a functionally identical version to StarOffice. In areas other than East Asia, you will have StarOffice 8 instead of StarSuite 8 installed on your computer. Initializing StarSuite 8 1. Click Start > All Programs > StarSuite 8 and select any StarSuite tool. 2.
Enter your name and click Next to continue. 5. Click the Check for updates automatically check box to get the online update and click Next to continue. 6. Click an option to registrate and click Finish to complete the initialization. English 4. The registration is voluntary. After you initialize StarSuite 8, the StarSuite 8 Quickstarter icon will appear in the notification area. You can right-click this icon to open StarSuite 8 applications.
Using StarSuite English StarSuite Impress To prepare presentation slides 1. 2. From the Windows® desktop, click Start > All Programs > StarSuite 8 > StarSuite Impress. In the Presentation Wizard dialog box, click Empty presentation to create a new presentation slide, or From template to create a new presentation slide with a template. To edit an existing file, click Open existing presentation. Click Next to continue. You can click Create to skip all the wizard instructions. 3.
Select a slide design and click Next. English 4. Click the Preview check box to preview the slide design. 5. Select a slide transition and the presentation type. Click Create to start StarSuite Impress. 6. Prepare your presentation slides in the StarSuite Impress window.
StarSuite Writer English StarSuite Writer is a word processing application that allows you to edit or convert documents. Click Start > All Programs > StarSuite 8 > StarSuite Writer to start StarSuite Writer. StarSuite Calc StarSuite Calc is a spreadsheet application that helps you calculate, analyze, and manage your data. Click Start > All Programs > StarSuite 8 > StarSuite Calc to start StarSuite Calc. StarSuite Math StarSuite Math hekps you create formulas.
Select an action to proceed after saving the database and click Finish. 4. Select a location to save the database file. 5. Build your database in the StarSuite Base window. English 3.
SoftStylus English SoftStylus is a finger-writing recognition application that enables you to write down messages, e-mails, and other notes with your finger or the supplied stylus pen. There is also a virtual keyboard available for you to type. Getting started 1. 2. 3. Open the application you are going to write into, StarSuite Writer in the following examples. Launch SoftStylus by clicking Start > All Programs > SoftStylus > SoftStylus. You can also launch the program from Eee Bar.

To shift to finger writing mode, select the Finger writing mode icon on the virtual keyboard to open the recognition window. English Input recognized as... Alternatives Show virtual keyboard Configuring properties Click the Properties icon on the toolbar to configure settings. General The General tab describes the software title, build number and copyright information. Clicking the Launch SoftStylus when Windows Starts check box will launch SoftStylus automatically when the OS starts. Supported languages The Supported languages tab allows you to select recognition languages or keyboard type.
Recognition English The Recognition tab allows you to adjust Recognition Speed and Alternate Choices by moving the respective sliders and then click OK when done. Recognition Speed: the delay interval between the moment you finish writing and the moment when the recognition engine begins to analyze the input data. • Alternate Choices: the maximum number of alternatives shown in the window. To enable Chinese text input recognition, click the Word Prediction for Chinese Character check box.
Opera English Opera is a touch-enabled web browser that gives you quick access to your favorite web sites with the Speed Dial function and provides you with various Widgets. Opera widgets are miniature applications that run with Opera and live on your desktop. There are widgets for just about any purpose—weather forecasts, games, clocks, dictionaries, etc. To launch Opera, click the Opera icon on Eee Bar.
Selecting text English If you toggle Text Selection On , you can highlight any words on the web page to look them up in the dictionary or translate them into other languages by right-clicking and performing respective actions. Speed Dial Click the New tab icon to open the Speed Dial page. Every time a new tab is opened, you are presented with nine thumbnails, each representing a web address.
You can also do the following to save a web address as a Speed Dial entry. English 1. 2. Click one of the nine thumbnails. A dialog box appears. Select a web page from the list or type a new address, and then click OK. Widgets To add a widget 1. 2. 24 In the Widgets panel, click Add and the Opera Widgets web page is opened. Select a widget you want to have and click Launch. Opera will download and install it automatically.
English 3. You can drag and place widgets anywhere you want on your desktop. Each widget has individual settings. Opera widgets run within Opera. When you close Opera, the widgets will also be closed. 4. If you close a widget, you can re-open it from the Widgets panel. You can also rearrange your widget collection or delete widgets you no longer want.
Eee Cam English Eee Cam, working alone or with instant messaging software (Windows Live Messenger, Skype, etc.), provides interesting effects and useful add-ons for your webcam. Eee Cam allows you to perform the following functions: • • • • • • • • Add effects to your webcam image or video, including emotion effects, frames, filters, and distortions. Perform freehand drawings on the webcam image. Take a snapshot or consecutive webcam photos.
Launching Eee Cam English You can launch Eee Cam in one of the following ways: • Click the Eee Cam icon on Eee Bar. • Start a video chat with an instant messaging program, and Eee Cam will be launched automatically. (Eee Cam needs first to be enabled.) Eee Cam modes Eee Cam has the following two modes depending on the way you launch this program. Certain functions are available only under a specific mode.
Applying special effects English Eee Cam provides special effects and drawing tools that you can apply to your live webcam image in both Stand Alone Mode and IM Mode. When applied, a remote party will see the effects right away. You can also apply these effects to the snapshots or webcam videos. Webcam image Emotion effects • • • • 28 Drawing tools Captured content (From left to right) Frames, Filters, Distortions Emotion effects: select to apply to your webcam image.
Drawing tools English To perform drawings on your webcam image: 1. Click on the Draw button 2. On the Drawing Tools panel, select any of the Pen , Stamp , or Eraser tool. Use the mouse or your finger to draw on the webcam image. To remove the drawing from the webcam image, select the Clear all button. 3. . Taking photos Eee Cam has two kinds of photo-taking functions. • Snapshot: Take a photo snapshot of the current web cam video. • Burst: Take consecutive webcam photos.
Recording videos English With Eee Cam you can capture a live web cam video complete with special effects, or set up a timed video recording. Video-recording is available only in Stand Alone Mode. Capture: Capture a live web cam video. Timed Recording: Schedule a Continuous recording, a Time-lapse recording, or a Motion detection recording. To switch between the two functions, click the arrow to select the function you want. • • Capture 1. Click the Capture button. 2.
Sharing documents 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. English In IM Mode you can share documents for viewing during a webcam session (in PPT, JPG, BMP or PNG formats). To begin sharing a document: In IM Mode window, click the Sharing tab. Click the Import button or drag the file(s) you want to share in the pane. Click the Play button to display the shared document(s) in your webcam window. Select a viewing mode: Click the Clear effect button to end the shared document viewing and return to the normal webcam session.
Eee Memo English Eee Memo is an electronic post-it note application that allows you to scribble notes to your family and yourself on the touch screen with your fingertip or the stylus pen. Launching Eee Memo To launch the program, click the Eee Memo icon on Eee Bar. The Eee Clock will appear showing the system time. You can turn over the clock between hand clock and electronic clock by moving your finger leftwards or rightwards near the center of the screen.
Writing a note Launch the Eee Memo board. Touch a colored post-it note paper to begin writing your note. English 1. 2. Select a Pen Color from black, red, blue, and green by touching the respective icon and write on the note paper. 4. You can select the Eraser icon (Yellow) to clear what you wrote. When done, select OK. 3.
The notes you wrote will be posted on the Eee Memo board. You can drag a note to anywhere you want over the board. 6. To delete a note on the board, simply drag it to the wastebasket on the bottom right corner of the screen. English 5. Dragging notes to the wastebasket does not destroy them completely. Notes in the wastebasket can still be recycled. Refer to the next section for details.
Managing the deleted notes English For notes in the wastebasket, you can delete them one by one or delete them all. You can also recycle a deleted note. Touch the wastebasket and three options appear: • • • Delete All (Red): Select to empty the wastebasket. Recycle (Blue): Select to display all the deleted notes to perform further actions. Cancel (Green): Select to return to the Eee Memo board. To render each of the deleted note, press the Recycle (Blue) button and select a note.
Eee Cinema English Eee Cinema is a complete multimedia center that enhances the enjoyment of your music, photos, videos, and movies. To launch the program, click the Eee Cinema icon on Eee Bar. Music The Music function allows you to listen to music files (in MP3, WAV, and WMA formats) or audio CDs (an external USB optical drive is required) with visualizations and create playlists (in .wpl format) for your favorite songs. Select Music to display menu options.
Browsing for music English Select Browse By to browse for music by Album, Artist, Genre, Song Title, Playlist, Folder, or Rating. Use the Page Up and Page Down buttons to scroll through your music files. Playing music To play music, simply select a folder, song, artist, album, etc. to begin playback. You can also select Menu to display more options. You may use the playlists you create in Windows® Media Player. If you want to play a music CD, you will need to connect a USB optical drive to the computer.
During playback English During playback, you can use the playback control bar to adjust volume and turn on/off shuffle or repeat. Select Visualization to start the visualizations during playback. To exit, press Esc or Backspace on the keyboard. Recent Music From the Eee Cinema main menu, select Music > Recent Music to view the music you recently listened to. To remove an item from the list, select the item and then select Clear History.
Photos English The Photos function lets you view your photos (in JPG, PNG, and BMP formats) in a slideshow or apply minor fixes to your photos. Select My Photos to display menu options. Browsing for photos Select Browse By to browse for photos by Folder, Date (date taken or last modified), or Rating (the ratings you gave). Use the Zoom in and Zoom out buttons to change the size of the folder/photo thumbnails.
Viewing photos English Slideshow After finding the folder that contains the photos you want to view, enter the folder and select Menu > Slideshow to start playing a slideshow. By default, all the photos in the selected folder will be included in the slideshow. To view certain photos in a slideshow, select the individual photos before selecting the Slideshow button. Use the playback control bar to control the slideshow.
Fixing photos English You can apply fixes to your photos, including rotating photos and removing red-eye. To do so, select the photo you want to fix and then select Menu > Fix. You can also select Auto Fix for Eee Cinema to automatically fix a photo’s properties, such as overly lit or dark photos. Videos The Videos function allows you to play your videos in ASF, WMV, MPEG-1/2, DVR-MS, AVI, and DivX formats. Select My Videos to display menu options.

Movies English The Movies function allows you to play DVDs. To play a DVD, you will need to connect a USB optical drive to the computer. When you insert a DVD into the optical drive, it will begin to play automatically. The supported disc formats are: DVD, SVCD, VCD, and MiniDVD. Settings The Settings function allows you to configure Audio, Display, DVD, and Photos settings. Select an option and follow the onscreen instructions to perform actions.
Eee Splendid English Eee Splendid Video Enhancement Technology provides several preset modes that you can select to optimize image quality for the best visual result. Experimenting with Eee Splendid To launch the program, click Start > All Programs > ASUS > Eee Splendid > Eee Splendid. The left pane shows what a sample image is like on your screen, while the right pane shows what the image is going to be like after you apply an Eee Splendid mode. Testing a mode 1. 2. 3.
Creating a profile Eee Top ET16 Series English You can create your own settings by clicking the My Profile button and adjust Colorfulness and Color Temperature by moving the respective sliders. You can also base your settings on a preset mode. When done, click the Save button to save the results.
ASUS AI Direct Link English ASUS AI Direct Link allows file-sharing with high transfer rate among computers in a home network. You need to install AI Direct Link to all your home PCs using the support DVD, and then connect them to the same network. Turn off your firewall software other than Windows Firewall before launching AI Direct Link. Enabling the incoming folder 1. Right-click the AI Direct Link tray icon and select Incoming folder > Enable incoming folder.
Right click the AI Direct Link tray icon and select Incoming folder > Open incoming folder. The AIDirectLinkIncoming folder opens. Put the files you want to share into this folder. The authorized user has full access to this folder. English 4. Connecting to another computer 1. 2. 3. Right-click the AI Direct Link tray icon and select Connect. Click Refresh. The software starts searching for the connected computer. The name of the computer found is listed. Click Open to open its shared folder.
